Which is better? Caliber 243. Either the Savage Combo at walmart for 399.00. Or; The Mossburg Combo at Academy for 299.00. Price between the two not the issue. Which is the better overall package, and Quality. Thank you.

You'd be better off buying the Savage without the scope and buying the glass you want, the combo scopes are junk.

My brother just bought the Mossberg ATR and put a Simmons scope on it. Shot right under an 1" group at 100yds. 3 shots.
I have a current edition of Shooting where they compare these 2 rifles against each other and the Mossberg beats it out.
Out of 5 models tested, 3 of each model, the Savage Axis is last.
"Battle of the Budget Rifles" is the name of the Article in Aug 2011 issue of Shooting.
The Savage has the worst accuracy, mostly because of the trigger is poor.
"Mossberg is still a shotgun company to many shooters, but this model (ATR) is all rifle - so much so that it earned our nod as the most surprising performer by shooting, appearing, and handling above expectation.
Weight: 6.75lbs Barrel 22" 1:10 twist Mag capacity: 5 Trigger: 5 out of 5 stars
"Savage - This rifle has a lot of accuracy potential that is hampered by the poor trigger. In our opinion, adding Savage's AccuTrigger to the Axis would make a huge diference, and we'd be happy to pay the extra $$. "
Weight: 6.5lbs Barrel 22" 1:10 twist Mag capacity: 4 Trigger: 2 out of 5 stars
* One “Aw-Sh*t” wipes out ALL “At-A-Boys” The difference between shooting and soothing is one "H"'s placement.
