I'm about build an AR and I would like to use for hog hunting. Do you think .223 would be ok. I was planning on getting a .308 upper eventually. Your opinions are much appreciated.

AR-15 or AR-10? If you went AR-15, then I'd look at something bigger than a 223, like a 6.8 or a 6.5 Grendel. If you can go AR-10, then a 308, 7mm-08, or 260 would be good medicine. A 223 is a little light for pigs, IMO. (I know from experience). But, if you do go 223, get a good premium bullet for deep penetration, like a TSX or bonded bullet. I'm not saying a 223 won't kill a pig. I'm saying that if you have the option to pick a caliber for pigs, the 223 would not be my first choice.

.223 will be fine, just get a 1/7twist barrel.
Also a .308win fits the AR-10 platform. If you want a .30cal in the AR15 platform look at the 300aac blackout.

I see and hear this same question all the time. Any caliber will kill an animal. Just pick one and use it.

I've seen a lot of pigs have their life cut short by .223 round.

Please understand you will not be able to get a 7.62x51/.308 upper to fit onto an AR-15. Two different platforms.

I think I might get a 223 for now and then save money and build a nice ar-10 further down the road when the funds are a little higher.

just bout anything....between those 2 I think I'd go with 223 but brush gun 30/30 will do the trick just fine and fun too.

While a true .308 needs an AR10 base, a 7.62x39 will fit on an AR15 platform. If you are building from a kit, the 7.62x39 upper is about $40 more from Model 1. I have both the 7.62 and 5.56 AR15's. No doubt the 7.62 has much more punch at the business end.

You can only kill something so dead 223/556 is fine use good ammo shoot your weapon know your limitation's make your shot in the kill zone and you will be eating alot of pork chop's.

A .223 will work fine with a well-placed shot...we've killed thousands of hogs with that round. A .308 is a "more forgiving" round, in case of a less-than-perfect shot placement....but it is a little more intimidating for small-statured shooters. I've been testing a 6.8SPC for about 3 months and it's growing on me! It's roughly twice the bullet weight of a .223, not as much recoil as a .308 and it's on an AR-15 platform. Just my 2 cents!

I just built my 6.8 and I am liking it. I killed 2 with it last week. Another good option is the 458 Socom. Put a 405 gr. JSP @1600 fps inot a hog and they dont move.

I'm changing my advice, forget that .223!!!
.50 beowolf is the only cartridge capable of taking a hog with the AR15 platform. For the AR10, you'd have to go 338 fed.
I would suggest a .375 H&H though, maybe a 416 rigby double rifle. Those hogs have grissle thats been proven to be as though as kevlar.
and if you believe that....i've got something i'd like to sell you.

223 cause it's pretty cheap and does the job very well which has been very proven
