I haven't built these yet, but wanted to bounce my idea off of you. Going to make the frames out of steel, and actually going to have to use some wider flat iron than originally concocted in my head, but here's the idea for the frame.

1 1/2" X 1/8" flat iron for the frame. (Cost $12 for 20' stick) Takes 1 stick per window.
1" X 1/8" flat iron for interior of frame. (Cost $8 for 20' stick) 1 each 20' is more than enough.

Window opening is 46" X 10". Windows will be hinged to almost lay flat against the upper/inside walls.

I plan to build 2 frames 46" X 10" out of the 1 1/2 X 1/8" flat iron. In between those 2 each 46" X 10" frames I will align those over one another and then put the 1" X 1/8" flat iron in between the outer frames on the 46" side and the 10" sides and tack those together. Windows will be pre-cut to 44 1/2" X 9" X 1/8". On the top side of the window (when window is closed) I will cut 3 each 4" pieces of the 1" X 1/8" flat steel to go in between the outsides of the frame. Then I will drill holes for 4" hinges with the bolt holes going through the outer frame, through the loose 1" X 1/8" piece, and on through to the other outside of the frame. Once those are drilled I'll take out the little 4 inch pieces and slide my glass into the frame. Then the hinges will be bolted to the window frame (which will hold the window within the frame on that side), followed by the frame with glass in it and hinges on it secured to cover the window opening.

A small eye bolt will have been welded to the inside of the frame and small boat thingy (kind of T-shaped like you use to tie up a boat to a dock) welded to the outside of the window frame. A small rope will tie to the inside eye bolt then go up through an eye bolt in the roof. Once the window is raised the rope can be quickly, and effortlessly, secured to the boat thingy.

That's kind of the plan I have in my head. Not sure if anyone else can picture it. LOL I'm guessing about an hour apiece to actually build them and get them installed.

Any input? Idea suck? Better way to skin a cat? I don't want plexiglass.

Already thought of a change. I'm going to be tacking mine together with a welder. The materials for the frame above would allow you to actually bolt that entire window frame together and never need anything but a chop saw to cut the material and a drill. The 1" X 1/8" piece going all around the outside in between the outer frame would allow you to tighten it down with bolts all around without breaking the glass. I "May" actually just go that route in the end. I'll let you know.

IF you can find a place to get aluminum flat metal, and want to go the bolt it together route, that would definitely be the way to go as it would be lighter and easier to drill the holes. I haven't found a place here to get aluminum yet, but I'm sure it's available somewhere.

I'll take pics.
