I recently acquired an example of John C's genius: A couple of questions:

I know oil is a no-no: Where do I absolutely need to grease the works?

Is there a commercial load for this rifle suitable for hunting that is safe for the action? Everything I have read so far stresses that commercial 30-06 is too hot for the Garand.

I bought a book about the rifle; can you guys suggest any books that may be useful about the Garand?

Hornady and Federal make Garand loads. You can also get some of the Greek surplus from CMP.

Omaney, do you reload?

If so there is a couple of ways of getting some hunting ammo for your rifle.
If not then you can get a Schuster or Mccann adjustable gas plug and make you rifle shoot factory ammo with perfect safety.
If you re-load, you can work up a load with IMR-4064 or IMR-4895.
My pet M1-Garand load is 48.5 grs 4064 with either 150 or 165 gr bullets. I get 2700 fps or so with each.
You can also just pull some bullets from the HXP ball ammo CMP sells, and seat a flat based 150gr sporting bullet in its place. Works like a charm and shoots to the same point of impact as the ball ammo.

The adjustable gas plugs let you adjust for any currently produced ammo you choose.

Take care

I run a Schusters plug on mine. Will cycle any of the M2 ammo I could find. Also likes the American made PMC softtips for whitetails.

Just installed a Schusters plug but haven't had the opportunity to get to the range yet. $35 seems like an awfully cheap fix. Thanks guys.

I have about 300 rds of Korean M2 ball but I'm gonna pull the bullets and replace them with some Noslet BT's for hunting.

As to lubricating the M-1 Garand rifle, the rule of thumb is: If it rotates, oil it. If it slides, grease it. Most any high temperature rated grease will work fine. If U.S. Army issue rifle grease is not available, wheel bearing grease will work just fine.

This has always been my mantra as well. Are there "critical" areas with which I may not be aware?
