I searched to see if there was one of these threads already and didn't find one.
Like the title says 6.8 vs. .300 Blackout
Which do you think is better and why? I have people tell me very different opinions on this topic and haven't found a clear answer really. one guy told me to ditch the .300 b/c it was not a effective hunting round, another guy told me I was crazy for wanting to trade a .300 for 6.8 b/c the .300 ballistics are far superior to a "POS 6.8"
I will be using this rifle for hunting mainly hogs and deer at ranges from 100 to 300 yards

I went with 6.8SPC over Blackout. 6.8 ballistics are fine for a hunting round at the ranges you suggest. My main concern was availbility and price of ammo. Midway carries approx 30 make/brands of 6.8SPC starting at under $20 a box. They currently have 1 Blackout in stock. Not much variety there.

We have a whisper, its cool shooting subs out of it. But they aren't going fast enough to frag, so its like hitting them with an ice pick.
Both calibers are shorter range for sure. I went with 6.8 primarily for the ammo availability. I run 95 grain TSX out of mine.

As the link posted above I think shows there are verious opinopns on which is best. Which is best I have no idea but inside 150 yards using supersonic hunting loads and good shot placement I doubt aby deer could tell the difference between the two since it would be dead.
If I were going to buy an AR strictly for hunting and ammo cost not an option I would go with either the 6.5 Grendel or the 30 AR Remington.

I know I sound like a broken record but, both are viable rounds for the intent they where designed for.
On the note of ammunition availability its coming another 6 months and they should have everybody approved and on board. Remington alone has 7 more load going through development right now, one of which is an expanding sub-sonic which should make things very interesting. There is a list of about 10 other ammunition manufactures that have anywhere from 2-4 loads each going through final phases of development right now. Once everybody gets it out I look for it to be cheaper and more readily available than 6.8 as there is no shortage of brass for .300 aac blk
To me it all boils down to do you want to run it suppressed ? If not I would go with 6.8, if you had dreams of running it with a suppressor I would go .300 AAC BLK

Smurf Im not selling out on ya haha. That CMMG I have has a pistol length gas system and If i run supersonics through it I run a slight risk of popping primers, but the CMMG rep says that its a possibility and he's had plenty of customers run supersonics w/o issue.
also I got a smoking deal on that thing and if i could trade it for a .308 I prob would.
On the ammo topic I've heard that the ammo is coming in 6 months but that was 6 months ago from other people. I thought about shooting .300 whisper through it but that stuff is twice the price of the non-existant .300 blackout ammo. I will be interested in the sub-sonic expanding ammo that would make easy work of groups of pigs, w/ my 7.62 YHM phantom

Yesir. We have been running 95 grain TSX and its pure carnage! We have a whisper, its cool shooting subs out of it. But they aren't going fast enough to frag, so its like hitting them with an ice pick.

Since you have a suppressor then the obvious choice is 300BLK. Neither one is better but both will do as short range hunting round for Texas game. Like I have said before, the big advantage the 300BLK has over 6.8 is that you can use same BCG and magazines as in your 5.56. If you don't reload then ammo availability is poor at the moment. If you reload then it's a better choice since you have plenty of cheap brass available. If you're concerned about ammo right now, pick up a Lee kit for $100 and order some pre-made brass from this guy: http://www.bradswarehouse.com/ , dies: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=934234

Shot with Remington 300 AAC BLACKOUT 125 grain Match ammo, and 9 inch barrel AAC upper from 75 yards: The 220 subsonic is in stock now. The 125 Match ammo is in stock now. The low cost UMC ammo will be out in Nov. The AccuTip ammo will be out in Nov. Cor-Bon ammo will be out soon. Hornady Whisper(R) ammo is compatible with it. The ammo will ultimately be a lot less expensive than 6.8, and does not need a special bolt or magazine. And primed brass is 25 cents each at Midway. Aside from ARs - there are also these bolt guns: Model-7 rifles will ship soon and we are now taking orders from dealers/distributors. The Model-7 in 300 AAC BLACKOUT is designed by AAC (but with access to Remington drawings), assembled at AAC by a small team of people, and shipped from AAC. The barrel is nitrided and made to AAC specifications, but not made by Remington. Features: Weather-proof synthetic stock with AAC adjustable cheek piece. Muzzle threaded 5/8-24 for compatibility with sound suppressors. AAC thread protector included. Carefully Assembled in small batches at AAC on Remington-supplied custom actions. X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger. AAC Picatinny scope mount pre-installed using the same beefier Torx screws as used in the US Army's M24 sniper rifle. Nitrided light weight 1/8 twist 16" barrel, for extreme hardness and long life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vrNB9B7KEQ&feature=player_embedded

That AAC bolt action is beyond awesome!
To me it comes down to a few factors.
1. If you dont want to buy different mags, go 300aac 2. The 300aac uses the same bolt (not a deal breaker for the 6.8, but handy since 556 bolts are everywhere) 3. Suppressor, if you're going to use one get the 300aac 4. Barrel length, if you want an SBR get the 300aac
How you answer those questions should tell you which round is for you.

It you want to hunt over 300 yards, get 6.8.
If you want 30 round mag capacity, get 300 BLK.
If you want cheaper ammo and reloading, get 300 BLK.
If you want 30 cal bullets, get 300 BLK

It you want to hunt over 300 yards, get 6.8. I know this is 6.8 vs BLK but for over 300 yards, 6.5 Grendel really is the AR15 round to get.

I am going to build a 300 blackout since I already have a AAC 762sd suppressor. I dont see the point of the 300 blackout in a bolt gun for $799 when you can just buy a barrel for your AR for 200 bucks and run 300 blackout. Maybe its because I already have a .308 bolt gun and handload subsonics for it.
Its a hard choice between the 6.8 and 300 Blk, I personally am going with the 300 blackout because of cost of the build and the use of the same mags, also hope for cheaper ammo.
