I have a Remington 700 vssf II in .22-250. I mounted a Bushnell Elite 6-24x40 scope on it with Leupold STD rings and bases. I went to sight it in the other day and I maxed out my elevation adjusment getting a zero at 100 yards. I'm shooting a little high at 100 but I was trying to zero it at 200 yards. I just don't have any elevation adjustment left. So...is shimming the rear base an option? Or is that a big no no? Help me with some ideas fellers up

I'd look the setup over for something that's just not right, and if I couldn't find an explanation that could be addressed, I'd use a set of Burris Signature Zee rings with offset inserts. Shimming can work, but I think there's potential there for making new problems.

Before I would shim a scope I would try another set of rings. I have seen a simple ring swap make all the difference in the world.

Oh.....and shiming the base is an option but not the best option. Of all the scopes I have mounted in my life only one needed to be shimed.

I had taken it to Defoors in Wichita Falls & they were having trouble getting it boresighted with Leupold medium rings. So..I went and bought some low rings and mounted it myself. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure its all done right. I am shooting about 1 3/4" low at 200 & my scope only has 26 moa of adjustment(probably why I'm having trouble). Ya'll really think its the rings? Does anyone make a 10 moa base/ would that help? I like the scope to sit low like it is in the pics.

Shimming a scope is not hard, it is actually quite easy. You can buy brass shim stock at most hardware stores. I would start with 0.010" and go up from there. I have shimmed many scope bases in my life, I did not always have the money to go buy several different bases and rings to see which worked.

Take your base off, set it on the shim material and trace the outline. cut it with really good siccors or tin snips, and always cut to the inside of the line. use a leathe hole punch to punch out the screw holes.

Very important! carefully file all the edges of the shim stock to make them perfectly flat. mount your base and see if you added enough.

Those of you who do not stand behind our millitary, please stand in front of it!!!

Thanks fastliberator. I didn't think it would be all that hard either. Just wanted some advice from someone that has done it. I will try to shim it first and I can't get it right I will try the Burris rings. Thanks for the help.

This is the correct way to do it.

I traded for a rifle a while back, shot several rounds through it, and decided to change the scope. To my surprise, when I pulled the scope out of the rings there were two shims made from a keystone light beer can under the rear of the scope. The rifle held zero fine it seemed. I''m not suggesting this, just got a good laugh out of it.
