Hey All, I moved here to central Texas after getting back from Iraq and still trying to find a place around here to deer hunt. Here it's almost deer season and starting to get that "buck fever" lol j/k. Is there say any public hunts or maybe an inexpensive doe hunt around the Lampasas area. Preferably archery, I bought a bow and I'm getting good at it but haven't yet taken anything with it. If not Rifle season is always good too. I'd even be willing to help out on some land just to use it a few times.

Oh, yes, you still can. It's just when I looked into it, it seems like a lot of red tape. I've also talked to a few people with mixed answers about if they see any deer out there. So just in case I can't get out there, I was hoping to find another public place or inexpensive place to hunt.

O.k., I'm not knocking Fort hood's hunting I'm still trying to get registered there because even though other people's advise is good I still want to see for myself, But there's gotta be other places around maybe even as far as Grand Prarie. bolt

James, you may want to look into any Corp land around area lakes, but be prepared for allot of hunters on the opener. I hunted Lake Whitney in the 80's and it was pretty good. Don't put anything out like feeders and stands that you can't live with out either. Archery was way less crowded then general season.

I heard from a ,CSM, that the deer at Ft. Hood wear kevlar and K-pots!!! grin

iam stationed here at ft hood. i have lived in killeen area my whole life. fort hood is the way to go in your situation. they have people that 165+ deer every year out there. you just have to get out and do your homework. put feeders and cameras up. there is excellent hunting out there. deer, pigs, turkeys,a few exotics, qauil, pheasant, and dove. what more could you ask for. if you have any questions call me. 254-768-9496 jon. i grew up hunting on fort hood.

If I were you and with such short notice just head west toward Del Rio and hunt the public land around Amistad Lake.

It's pretty good hunting, and there are several areas you can access some good areas but you'll have to go and do some scouting first because it's a large area.

This is taken from the website:

2011 - 2012 Hunting Season

Starting on August 15, 2011, hunters can obtain a $20.00 National Park Service Annual Hunting Permit by appearing in person with their Texas Hunting License and photo ID at the Visitor Information Center on US highway 90, six miles west of Del Rio, Texas. The Visitor Information Center is open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 2011-2012 Hunting Season at Amistad National Recreation Area begins September 1, 2011 and ends February 26, 2012

I would also recommend Ft. Hood but it's pretty close to the season and you have to meet certain requirements such as hunting classes and such so I would still check into it and see if you can get on, but I'd give Amistad a shot if you don't mind the drive.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.
