i wanted to plant some kind of food plot on my lease in robertson county but i don't have the equipment to plant a traditional food plot. so i was thinking about buying a bag of throw and grow(something like this http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/pr...mp;merchID=4006) and thowing it out. i would prep it the best i could porbably cuting the grass down and raking a small area but before i did this i was looking for some input. any help is greatly appreciated.

I'd go to the local feedstore in the area you are hunting. They generally have a fall or spring blend that you can "throw and grow". Last year I told them what I was trying to do and they were able to help me out with a fall blend that would grow as long as it was touching the dirt. I prepared the area with a weedeater and a rake and had great success - as soon as it got a little rain.

You really want to look at that stuff before you just grab a bag. If you look at ingredients, most of that stuff is almost all rye grass. So youll have green come up, but it doesnt have much nutritional value.

You do it yourself cheaper. Mow or Round up ( do this a few months in advance) then rake the plot enough to break up the dirt.
Buy some small seeded plants/grass (Rape, turnip, rye etc.) and wait until you definitely have rain coming. Before the storm hits spread the seed then firm the ground the best you can using 2x12's, feet, atv or truck. Pray for more rain.

How big is the area you want to plant? Will livestock have access to it? Full sun, limited sun or shaded area?

I got some Evolve Harvest "throw and grow" last week and am going to plant it around my aerobic sprayers out in the pasture. It'll be a test to see if I want to run more lateral lines way ou in the pasture.

Lots of variables.Where are you located? near College station? If so thats pretty sandy country.Under normal weather conditions I would think it would be fairly easy to grow stuff,But this year is anyone's guess.

Since it is a small area I would look into brassicas or turnips since they will provide lots of tonnage of growth along with maybe some oats also. Ask them when you buy the seed it they have any of those jumbo bags with 5" of rain in them while you are at it. grin Take some pics before, after and after a rain it get growing and post them on here.

I sowed oats by hand in Tyler Co. last year and they came up great...but we had a little rain after I did it! Don't know if that will happen this year! Sea Dog, how is your place lookin?
All the Cypress breaks in the Neches bottom on our place look like crushed concrete! The only good thing is that the springs on the high end of our lease haven't gone dry, they just aren't putting out enough water to make it to the bottoms. Seein a few deer but not close enough to see their condition. Just got the game cam out last week.

Well one of my stands has a spring fed creek running by it and eventhough its way low, it still flows!!! Deer look pretty good and have seen several does with twins, (one in my backyard)!!! The only problem I have at the lease is too many dogs running loose!!! My plots just burned up in spring but planted before the last rain we had so I'll see when I get home in october!!!

I learned a trick from a friend about the the creeks. Take a shovel and dig out a shallow pool about 3 feet in diameter, just throw the dirt downstream and you have an instant drinking pool right in your shooting lane!...and it's free!

There is a pool real close to my stand right now that the animals can get to and my feeder right next to it!!! It took me 2 days to clear the thicket to get to the creek to set up feeder and stand!!!
