Im looking to drop around 100-140 on an optic set up for my 7.62x39 upper if no one trades me into a 556 with optics b thursday. so that seeming like it is going to be the case what do you guys recomend? im leaning twords a redfield and a good base, gun is a flat top and will be used primarily for hunting.

Primary Arms sells a nice 1-4x for $120 and their proprietary base is fine for the money. I had one on a Spikes and it performed well.

SWFA has a Vortex for 99 bucks, seems like a good deal for the money.

Academy has Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40's on clearance for $129.88 right now that would be tough to beat in that price range. Just my opinion, but I think a Redfield Revolution 2-7 4plex would be just about ideal for you on that particular weapon.

I'm looking at the $149 Vortex Viper 2-7x32 at SFWA and the $224 (plus $30 mail in rebate) Bushnell trophy XLT 1.5-6x42 Illuminated #4 reticle for my AR.

We've got a few of those in the shop right now. Those on the surface look to be pretty good huh? A tad on the heavy side, but so far I've been pretty impressed with them.

Just a FYI for ya, I don't know if you have ever heard of Primary Arms they are big on ARFCOM (ar15.com). Although their stuff is manufactured in China they closely monitor quality of their products, they also test all their products on a 50 Beowulf. They are from Texas also so that’s a plus.

This is a low cost option alternative to acog, since most any other scope you get with magnification on it is a variable scope and look like a traditional rifle scope, I'm probably going to buy one if I don't buy an EoTech instead still thinking about it.

It is also calibrated for 5.56/223 so it has bullet drops on the reticle. I think I just sold myself on the dang thing haha.

Skip the BARF.COM stuff.

Go with an aimpoint, whatever model you prefer (i personally like the micro).

You cannot beat the battery life and overall toughness. Buy once, cry once.

He said "AFFORDABLE" not a $500 dollar optic that our troops need for war, I'm sure he doesn't need it for duty or war, he is probably looking for something to plink with so as you say it "BARF.COM" stuff will handle that just fine.

An aimpoint is nearly 4 times the price of the primary arms red dot, and is likely to be overkill for the typical civilian plinking use. There are lots of good reviews on the Primary arms clones.

Another option, with a better warranty than the Primary Arms, yet significantly cheaper than the Aimpoint are the vortex red dots. The Strikefire for about $150 and the SPARC (vortex version of the 2MOA Micro) for <$200 are good values. I just bought a SPARC for my AR, but have yet to mount it. I got the SPARC shipped from Optics Planet for $189 with a free streamlight keychain flashlight. Not a bad deal IMHO. FYI its listed for $199 on their website, but if you call they will knock $10 off.

You can find R1's for a great price. But thats ok, buy a primary arms. Then it will crap out, you'll have to get another and then you'll right where a used Aimpoint would cost.

If you want to buy a red dot ONCE, get an aimpoint. 2200 hours of run time and basically indestructable....I'd take the aimpoint.

If you want to buy junk that will die on you.....follow the advice of the tacticool barf.com guys and get a china dot. By the way, the PA 1-4x scope blows. Its heavy and very unforgiving on lateral movement...

Yeah that PA 1-4 I had sucked. I'd shoot at 100 yds and the bullets wouldn't even get there. Pigs would laugh at me, coyotes howled, and those armadillos I shot with it filed a letter of complaint with the BBB. Started growing hair on my ears and sold the damn thing to a former Marine who, and for the life of me I can't figure this one out, said it was an impressive optic for the price.

BTW- You break a PA optic and Marshall will take care of you. I have been to his facility and met his staff- good people who know their stuff and bend over backwards to take care of their customers. They're not Aimpoint and they acknowledge the fact. For those of us who don't spend our days jumping out of airplanes or kicking doors in, PA optics are just fine. I ran a Micro Dot for a few thousand rounds on an Ultimak AK rail- it never missed a beat. I can't imagine a harsher environment for a red dot sight and handled it with aplomb. That's one helluva job for a $70 red dot.

Yea I've had several PA optics M3 with 3X magnifier M4, and the 1-4X all have been great and marshal always goes above and beyond. Normally buy one day and comes in next day or day after.

X2 on Primary Arms being sufficient for the civilain market. I have their M4 red dot and 1x4 red dot scopes and the hogs were just as dead as if I'd used a Trijicon.

SWFA is runnning a special on a 1x4 with scope mount for 150.00, so you might want to check their website (or here in the classifieds)

I picked up the SWFA 1x4x32 for my AR and with the dual illuminated reticle it is a great scope. Was $149+tax. You can read my evaluation of the scope at their website. A big plus is that it's made in Japan not China by Optisan. Just my .02
