Found a great spot for an oat patch. Is it too late to plant them?

It hasn't rained at my place in months. Only thing growing is dust and rocks.

It's not time yet. Give it another two or three weeks, but the best place won't grow anything if we don't get any rain.

Yep, still too early. The earlier you plant, the more risks you run. I like to plant mid to late Sep depending on moisture.

Watch the farmers when they start to plant it is time. Mid to late Sep is good depending on rain. Last year was strange around my house though. They planted wheat very late. I have never seen it planted that late. We are going to need to get the moisture content up in soil to grow anything.

Going to take some sub level ground moisture and we haven't had enough rain to do that, so unless you've had some significant rain in your area, you may just be feeding the birds and turkeys.

I'm wondering if any farmer is going to risk planting any oats this year. Long term forecast has us high and dry and we sure aren't going to plant any this year. Better off going to the casino and spin the wheel.

Usually farmers have to have their crops planted by a certain date in order to get crop insurance. No sense in planting anything until you have enough moisture in the ground for the seeds to germinate.
I agree with others. Watch the farmers.

looking at the long term forecast on Accu-Weather it looks like "cooler" weather (mid-high 80s) on the way with some forecasted rain for the first week in September. Hopefully each of us will get up to .50 in rain and then can plant the 2nd half of September.

According to NOAA, they predict some "wet" weather for Texas in the Fall. We'll just have to wait and see, but the report I use (the Browning Report) is pretty good.

Cross your fingers!!

Can't get a plow in the ground around here. Things are going to have change big for me to plant anything.

Yep, end of Sept or the first of Oct. I can disk here but when it comes up the grasshoppers will eat it to the dirt if I plant now. That's probably the main reason I wait. Had several fields destroyed due to them suckers.

To hot, to dry and to early. Would wait till you got a rain and then look at planting in late Sept. till early Oct. at the earliest. Oats need some cooler weather. Army worms can be bad in dry year if it starts to rain soon in many areas and they can wipe out young oats.

Hope we get some good rain - it has been horrible at our place!

I'd hold off at least for a few weeks, and wait and see if anything comes out of the gulf.

There is a chance we may get some moisture in the ground before the season starts.

We can pray anyway!

Unless there is about 8 inches of moisture I won't bother. I'm dry to over 16 inches. And I don't know how much over 16 inches. So, I may not plant this year. last year I planted 10/1 after getting a 2.1 inch rain. I lost it all.

Same thing here, but got a little winter moisture and ended up with a great Oat patch this spring, (which now looks like desert!)
