Out of my 870 express? All it says is use 2.75 & 3" shells in magnum recievers and 2.75" in all others. It doesnt say anywhere on the reciever or barrel if its a magnum reciever. The serial # ends with a M.

It should be stamped on the barrel what it will shoot.

I'd assume if the barrel doesn't say magnum that its not worth the risk. Have you tried contacting Remington on it?

No. If the Express doesn't say Express Magnum, it's not a magnum. You can shoot them, but it's not intended for that, and can be dangerous. Early expresses were 2.75 only, as were their predecessors the Sportsmen series.

My understanding is that an "M" SN is a magnum. I have an 870 "M" and have alot of 3" shells through it. They chamber and shoot fine.
The above was the Internet input worth absolutely nothing. The following is probably better advice.
Contact Remington and find out from them.

If it is stamped on the barrel to use 2 3/4 in. or 3 in. shells only then that is what you can use. That is why Remington stamps it on the barrel. If it were chambered to also use the 3 1/2 in. shells, it would also say that on the barrel. Yours does not say that, so use what it says. Remington Express 870s in 12 ga. are all designed to use either 2 3/4 or 3 in. shells. The reciever would be stamped Super Mag if it were designed to also use 3 1/2 in. shells.

The original question wasn't asking if it would shoot 3 1/2" shells, and only asked if he could shoot 3" so this just adds to the confusion, so likethe post in the quote, you only shoot what it has stamped on the barrel, and you are good to go.
