Can you guys zoom in enough to tell what type of deer these are? I was talking with someone yesterday from Denmark who grew up on a farm next to a national park there. He says hunting is forbidden in the park but when the animals leave the park they are fair game. The problem is...they congregate in groups like this that can annhilate a crop in no time. I thought we had large herds in Texas Earl

Aha, I asked him if they were red deer since I've taken a red stag (here in Texas) and knew they were from the area - but I would imagine they are called something else there - red = roe I guess. Should have thought about that I agree, not many horns there. Must be a few stags in the woodpile somewhere though to come up with all those hinds. Earl

I just heard back from him. He had talked with his Dad who still resides on the farm in Denmark.
Yep, red deer though locally they are called kronhjort.

Earl Red Deer and Roe Deer are two separate species. Roe Deer are a small European deer, about the size of a small whitetail....and with small antlers (typically 3x3). Here's a pic...

Yep Wade that exactly what he said when he said they were kronhjort (red deer). I've taken a red stag here in Texas, haven't hunted roe but from your pic and description, I'd rather take a fallow next anyways Earl

I lived in Denmark a few years ago and lives about 2 minutes away from the deer park in klampenborg outside of Copenhagen. That picture was most likely taken there in the park. It is insane how high the numbers are of red Deer there.

Kronjort may mean Red Deer but it's not an exact translation. I know enough about Danish, to know krone means crown, so it must translate as Crown Deer. I don't know if the crown refers to, Royal, or to the Red Deers propensity for the antlers to form a three pointed crown .

nsmike, Interesting point you make there. The word "royal" in English is used to refer to the first three top tynes of a stag's antlers. You can refer to my website page for an explanation. See the bottom of the page on this link. New Zealand Hunting

I just used Google translate hjort is indeed deer. I have read your page New Zealand Hunting and can expand on it some. When I was stationed in Germany, in my hunting license class, we learned that in feudal times all game was divided into two classes Hochwild and Neiderwild with the Hochwild or High game being reserved for Royalty. The Hochwild was further divided into classes by feudal rank. A double crown, was considered the ideal and reserved for the King, hence the Royal designation.

That is "très intéressant" (the only words I know that aren't in English)
Thanks for taking the time out for the explanation. European hunting is steeped in tradition which we don't really have over here in New Zealand any more.

This is what the red deer look like in a paddock in New Zealand. It's bit different to the deer in the paddock at the start of this thread.

New Zealand Red Deer in the wild. This is what they look like in New Zealand in the wild at this time of year. Close to cover early in the morning feeding on new growth. This pair smelled me soon after the picture was taken.

WILD RED DEER NEW ZEALAND A couple of wily wild red hinds in the Canterbury mountains. The red deer seem to be more wary than the fallow deer in this area and only come out right on dark as the sun is setting.
