Hey - I'm fairly new to hunting. I went last year and shot a deer using a friend's rifle. I'm looking to go dove hunting and deer hunting when the seasons opens up, but first I need some advice on what kind of shotgun and rifle/scope to get. Any advice would be great!

I would be interested in something like an M4 for the rifle...

There is a Beretta 390 shotgun on here that is one of best models ever made.

The 390 on here is a good one or the 20ga 870 wingmadter is another good one for the shotguns.

Aggie, you can hunt with an AR-style rifle but I think most here would advise the use of a larger caliber than the .223 Remington. I think quite a few of us would strongly suggest a good bolt-action rifle. My own specific suggestion would be bolt-action in .30-06 or maybe .308 Winchester.

You can get an AR-style rifle in .308, but they are quite pricey and they are awfully heavy. You can get into a very nice bolt-action with a higher-end scope for the same money. You can get into a decent bolt rifle with a very useable scope for around $500. I think an AR in .308 would run at least twice as much, possibly 3x as much.

WHOOP! see the post below on "what rifle for daughter". IMHO the .223 is for experts....they are fun though. You could get an AR style rifle, in a bigger caliber, 6.Grendel, .243, .308, .7mm-08, etc.

6.5 Gendel in a boltgun

.223 AR

300 blackout upper and any AR-15 lower (spikes tactical would be my recommendation). You won't be dissappointed

get a 6.8 AR and shoot everything with it. except birds of course, if your going for cheap on a good shotgun go mossburg if price doesn't matter go w/ the above suggestions

then when everyone comes out with more of a ammo selection switch to a .300 AAC blk, like silverphonix

Rifle - A Savage somewhere between .243 and 300 WMAG.
Shotgun - Remington 870 12ga.

If it can't be killed with either of those, it don't need to be killed. And neither of them will clear out your bank account.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.
Practice makes permanent.

Sage advice. and an older 870 is a better gun than the new ones.

You're dealing with an Aggie here. He'd just as soon call in an airstrike.

Anything between a 243 and a 30-06. The 30-06 will kill anything in north America without the muzzle blast and recoil of a 300 mag. The mag is too much for a beginner and you likely won't be able to accurately shoot it because of the recoil and muzzle blast. A .243 will take down any Texas whitetail.

Those mossberg rifle combos at academy look like good starter guns. Buddy has one and loves it. Then get ya a 870 or moss. 500 12ga pump and your set. Rifle caliber is what up to you. In my opinion 243 and up will get her done just fine. But lots folks kill deer with the 22 caliber guns just fine. "SHOT PLACEMENT". I personally like the 308 for Texas game. Will get the 300 win mag for elk

Whatever you do, don't get a new 870. They're junk, you can google it and see. For a pump I like a browning BPS.

For a semi auto shotgun there's plenty to choose from, just depends what your budget is.

As far as a rifle goes, I would just start with a bolt action rifle. I personally like a .270.
