When I first started guiding I had an older gentleman tell me how to stop a rutting buck that is chasing a doe from running off. What do you think he said was the best way?

If you can shoot doe then shoot the doe first. Will only work if the doe is in heat.

Last year a buck ran across the meadow in front of me right behind a doe he was all over. I grunted, whistled, everything and he ignored me. Then I yelled "hey" as loud as I could and he stopped and looked my way long enough for me to drop him.

If you can shoot doe then shoot the doe first. You posted just a minute before me!!! But if your not allowed to shoot a doe or only have one tag, a snort-wheeze call might be the only thing you can do. Worked for me one year bowhuntin. I had to do it twice, but he left the doe and came straight in. Had him at 20 yds!!!

Then I yelled "hey" as loud as I could and he stopped and looked my way long enough for me to drop him. I've done this before and it worked, but it was on a buck that had his nose to the ground and the doe was nowhere in sight. They are pretty well focused when in full rut, but you aren't always able to shoot that doe because you either don't have a tag or she is hauling butt and gone before you can even get the rifle up and ready.

Presumably, if the buck is on the move so is the doe, so how do you shoot the doe first any easier than shooting the buck?

Was guiding one time and enroute to pick up my hunters when a doe came running out of a drainage. There were 5 bucks following her, each one bigger than the one in front of him. The last 3 all would have been shooters, especially the last one, he was in the high 140s and was not in any huge hurry to keep up. He knew the other bucks would wear her down and then he'd just move in and take it all.
Pretty neat to see.
