Due to the bad pheasant reports we have received on the land we usually hunt in the panhandle of Oklahoma we are considering hunting some public land in Kansas. We were thinking about public land around Hutchinson or Dodge City during the first week in December. What could we expect as far has hunting success around those areas during the first week of December? We usually hunt with a group of 10 guys and usually have our limit around lunch time or not to long afterwards. Didn’t know if we should continue to go to our usual place or try up in Kansas. Any general information would be great.

Thanks,

Jake

that area has been hard hit with dry hot weather, you might try further east and north, traveling east from Jetmore usually more rain, north central is usually good.

+1

Hutchinson doesn't have a lot of birds during a good year.

Look for a place up near Oberton, KS it is in the north central. There is a good amount of public land and we hunted up there several years in a row and had pretty good success with quail and pheasants. We never ran into other folks hunting on public land either.

We are dry in So. Central Kansas but a few very timely rains have made for great cover and lots of food for birds. Some of our CRP has been baled for cattle feed. The first week in Dec. is also Rifle deer season. Might want to consider the 3rd week. We have 7000 acres of private property and a lodge for hunters. There is also some public land in the area. Would be happy to discuss the possibilities. 620-960-3894 Thanks, Steve

I would also knock on doors if you hunt later in the season. We had good luck North of McPHerson, KS hunting private land by knocking on doors. Less pressure and more birds when you get on.

We are 40 minutes west of Wichita, in the Cheney lake area.

You might want to look at this rooster crow count distribution. It will give you a good feel for where the birds are

Every one says knock on doors. I went up first of this year there were not any doors to knock on. We were hunting far North West Kansas it was nothing but fields and fields.

Sometime they are hard few and far between. We even ask farmers we run itno at gas stations, diners, and bars. I have also stopped and talked to farmers at 4 way stops out in the country.

Did you hunt public land or private?
