When trapping hogs what should you do if your trap had captured an out of season animal and said animal killed itself by thrashing in trap? Im going to start trapping hogs and had seen this happen before with one of my uncles traps out in east Texas, he is what you would call "Game Wardens Wet Dream". Do you contact the GW and are you in BIG trouble if that happens or what???

Thats why you shouldn't have a top on your trap and you shouldn't have to worry about it. Yes hogs can climb but I'd much rather save a deer than worry about losing a hog that climbed out...

I dont think I've ever seen a trap without a top.

I couldn't see building one with a top unless it was located where I lived that I could check it morning and night but I still don't want to see a deer kill itself trying to get out of a trap when you could cut the top off and they would have no problem jumping out.

Same with turkeys they will kill them selves in a trap as well when they could easily just fly out and be fine.

curious as to what the answer is myself. Never trapped but never know.

this is why ppl mix a little diesel with corn as a bait. Deer won't touch it, but the piggies could care less.

I caught a big 8 point in our pig trap and we just let him out. He had a bloody nose but was fine. I have caught several deer and exotics in our pig trap and none of them died.

We check our trap after the morning hunt and after dark so that they aren't in there too long.

My Taxidermist mounted a huge 12 point with an X scar on his nose and we figured it was a from a pig trap. He may have escaped that trap but he didn't get away from the bullet.

Unless you have those rare "jumpin" hogs you don't need a top. We let a guy put a trap on our place 2 years ago and he caught 2 young does in a week. I found the 2nd one dead in the trap from self inflicted wounds. My wife found the first one and made him come get it out.

Kyotee on this forum is the one that needs to answer this question. He works for TPW, and could probably clear up the grey on this. I would give my .02 but I would rather get if from the horses mouth so to speak.

put bobwire on the door the hogs will push through it most of the time the deer wont work that hard for corn , an the deasel trick dnt work its so hot it will dry out an the deer will eat it , so i would just make the gate have wire on it like a fence an the hogs will push through to get in

There are tons of feed stores all across Texas that sell box traps that would completely contain a hog. They have been around for years! I'm amazed you say that you have never seen one.
