My mother and brother are moving from Kerrville to Ruidoso, NM in the coming months. This means that I'll have a "base camp" from which to do a little hunting in the coming years. I've looked over the NM Dept of Game & Fish website and I see that tags are by drawing for specific areas.

Can anyone tell me anything about the hunting in the areas around Ruidoso? Specifically Game Management Units 34, 36, & 37?
Thanks

Mike, I have never hunted the area but I live close by and have been there a lot to fish or weekend get away. I can tell you that there is a ton of wildlife. I've seen elk, turkey, bear and the most deer (mulies) that I have ever seen in my life. Driving around one day down by a lake near one of the country clubs I must have seen 300-400 if not more and tons of nice bucks, even saw some standing on their hind quarters in someones yard eating something off a tree. It was the coolest thing but kinda freaked me out.....they were like locusts. Good area but you have to draw and if you don't live there the license is expensive.

BuckRage is correct. Lot's of game and the elk hunting is above average for New Mexico in units 34/36 but drawing a non resident tag is tough to do.
I've applied every year for the past 12 years and drawn 1 tag in 34. Most landowner elk tags for 34 or 36 run about 3500 bucks. Good Luck, Baker

Bow hunted Unit 36 for years on a 5000 acre place (Herd Ranch) out of Hondo that bordered the northeast corner of the Mescalero. Lot of Forest Service land around Ruidoso and pockets of State land between Glencoe and Hondo. Check out area south of Glencoe on County Road E006 (395). Some of these pockets also border the Mescalero but not sure how access is achieved. Good area - good luck.

Kind of what I suspected. Unless you live there it seems difficult to get drawn, based on what I've read.

Thanks for the input gentlemen.

NM does not have a preference pt system so your draw odds are as good as any non residents. If you bowhunt your draw odds go up substantially. If you have any kids that like to hunt NM does offer up some guaranteed cow elk tags if they are unsuccessful in the regular youth draw. I think you can get these for 34. I havent hunted 34 but its a big unit and I think you can get tags for MD, Elk, and Bear in that unit.
Good luck!

Mike,
Everything above is correct.
It is difficult to get drawn even if you live in NM! My mother lives in Ruidoso. I live in Clovis, NM and I have not drawn for elk in six years.
As stated above it is the "luck of the draw".
If you draw let me know and I'll help you out. Also have a rancher friend that will possibly let you hunt hogs.

Bear & Cougar are over the counter tags until the quota is met - which usually happens quickly in 34 & 36.

Thanks Clay,
I have all the dam hogs I would ever want to shoot within a few miles of home. Never had any desire to shoot bears or mountain lion.

I'll probably apply for MD & Elk in 34/36. If I get drawn then great. If not, then "oh well". Seems that MD hunts in Texas are a whole lot less troublesome.

Good luck Mike. If ya get drawn in the future let us know. You can also purchase a private land tag but they can be pricey. Best advice would be make plenty of friends.

It is hard to get drawn, you will have more luck if you apply for archery and muzzleloader hunts though.
