...I had posted previously about what is buying a gun and what cartridge would you recommend, but came across a heavy barrell H&R 12ga Ultra Slug w/Simmons scope that just "called my name" when I walked into the gun store in Cleburne....anyway, the more I checked, I found that there were a lot of guys claiming 2" groups @ 100yrds, some even stated close groups at 150yrds.....come to find out talking with an uncle, he has shot sabots in his Mossberg and says it shoots these numbers....just wondering if anyone was using slugs to hoghunt and any feedback/suggestions they might have........looking at rounds, seems like 1900fps, 500grain sabots are common ammo....not screamers, but still truckin along pretty good and packs a nice punch with that size of lead.......Might should have saved the dinero and put it towards a "real rifle", but how many times does a gun pick its owner???, so I am hoping the performance will be there.....2" groups @ 100yrds, perfect I think, afterall, how many of yall take longer shots than 100yrds at hogs?
Thanks in advance

I have a Remington 870 and was wondering if I could shoot slugs with it? 2 inch at 100 yds. is great in most anyone's book. The fps don't bother me at all when you consider the absolutely incredible umph of 500 grain rounds. It's like comparing a car to a semi truck. Consider the kinetic energy of that semi and what it can do compared to the car. At 1900 fps, the round will hit the hog long before the sound of the shot gets there anyway.

I have shot both slugs and sabots through my 12 gauge slug gun (Mossberg 500 with a scoped & rifled slug barrel). In my gun, sabots are quite a bit more accurate. Best I could do with slugs was about 3 or 4" groups at 50 yards (which I believe translates into 9-12" groups at 100 yards). Groups 2" or 3" inches across are very doable with sabots. I have only hunted deer with this gun, but I think either round would be OK for 75 yards or less on hogs and if you had a lot of confidence in your accuracy, I think both would easily kill hogs at 100 yards+.

If you are shooting sabots with a rifled barrel then you need to shoot something with at least 1600fps to get the accuracy the sabot is made for. The Hornady SST is a bad a** sabot slug. 2000fps they are sweet. They shoot high at 100 dead on at 150 and 6.7 low at 200 with plenty of knock down power. I was shooting the Winchester partition gold but they are just to pricey for hog hunting. You can find the Hornady's for 10-12 dollars a box. Thats 5 to a box. I have never seen a 500 grain slug you were talking about, the ones I have mentioned are 300-385 grain. If u have the money winchester just came out with a new sabot the xp and they run 25-27 dollars a box. I think that is retarded. I hope this helps. P.S I was shooting 5-6 inch groups at 100 and I know I could have dialed it in better. $2.00 a shot was killing me sighting it in.

Yeah, I was way off on the grain, they are right where you mentioned......I'll try the Hornadys also, shooting the 'chesters at 4 bux a pop kinda hurts, especially just to sight it in...thanks again for the tips everyone

Do you have to have a special barrel to shoot slugs? I still haven't had anyone answer my question about the Remington 870 and whether or not I can shoot slugs through it. Just asking.

You can shoot the 'rifled slugs' out of a smooth bore barrel, the sabots are meant for a rifled barrel. I've had GREAT accuracy from my 870 with rifled barrels, both sights and scoped!
Also, don't expect much in the way of accuracy from slugs down smooth barrels!
