Has anyone purchased a Public Hunting Land License before? I was viewing the TPWD Public Hunting Land in my area here in Denton County and was wondering how the process worked? Reservations? Can you practice/clay pigeons there? thanks for any info guys.

I've had one for several years. I think they're like 45-48 dollars now or something. I'm not sure about needing reservations or being able to target shoot on them. I use mine mainly for duck hunting on a few lakes. I'm not sure what the website shows but after you purchase the TYPE2 Public Lands Permit they send you 2 nice little books with tons of info on where, what, and how you can hunt on all the different properties.

I've done dove hunts in all the Denton areas...it's real slow hunting...if you are a great shot, you might limit-out over the course of a day, but if you are the average Joe, it can be frustrating as the birds show up as singles or couples...I've seen only a couple of flocks ever up there..I don't know of any public land you can shoot clays on.

No target shooting on the dove leases, pretty sure no target shooting on any of the public land listed in the APH lands.

APH is a good deal keep buying it but target shooting is not allowed on most APH land...trash dumping and leaving burned out stolen cars maybe...but no targetshooting

Check out Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds in Decatur. It's fairly close to you. I like Elm Fork in Dallas. It's my favorite place to shoot.

Public hunting permit is a great deal, in my opinion. Public dove fields tend to be pretty slow hunting, but I've never run into any crowds after opening weekend. No target shooting allowed on public land, but you should be able to find a range in your area.

Its Money You will never get back. You Might see or shoot at 2 birds and get stopped by the game warden about 10 times. Try army corp lakes and get their permit, atleast thats free.

i hunted that land in denton last year for 4 days total. Best i did was 4 birds in a morning. Watched some other dude shoot up about a box of shells and missed everyone of those sparrows or whatever they were....(not dove) he was shooting at though. Made my day....

Someone correct me if im wrong, but i do believe i read somewhere that TPWD was not going to release that land this year due to budget cuts. Dont hold me to that, it was a while back when i read the article. Might check into it just in case.

I've never had this problem and it has been well worth the money for me. The last few years I've hunted public land for doves and have done pretty good. Limited within an hr the past couple years on opening morning. Yeah you get checked by the game warden, for me it's only been on opening morning. The birds to tend to clear out within a few days since they get shot at quite a bit. But opening morning last year I had my limit within an hr and the 4 guys I was with had 5 birds between the 4 of them. And from my experience the Type 2 lakes are worth the extra $48 alone. I've hunted public lakes a few times and always have problems with other hunters. They like to set up 50yrds away, shoot purposely just to flush the birds, even had a few get mad because we were shooting birds and they weren't and they sprayed our decoys a few times. Plus if it's a fishing lake you always get the one or two fisherman that think there is a bass under your decoy. To me and the guys I have hunted public land with it is well worth the price. Yeah opening day of dove season may get a little busy sometimes but it keeps the birds moving. And I have never had an sort of interference on Type 2 lakes duck hunting. I've actually only been checked 1 time on a Type 2 lake in 15 years, and I wasn't even hunting I was scouting haha. My advice, see where some of the land is, if ya can without buying the license, and see what you think.
