I am planting a food plot in a low light area. What would you reccommend to plant?

If it flies it dies,If its brown its down.

Protein feeder with a bale of hay.
I wouldn't plant anything right now until we are out of this drought.

What if was not an issue? What do you suggest planting in a low light bottom area?

Take a soil sample see what your soil needs. Then talk to the local Agriculture Dept. and see what grows best in your area with your soil type. I used Turner seeds Spring mix this year and it was about 8-10" tall before the deer wiped it out. If this drought will end I will use their Fall plot mix. But we need rain and lots of it.

I would wait till the early fall season and we get some rain to soak the ground well. I would look at either oats or wheat as a trial in that area. Oats will tolerate the drought better if it continues and take grazing pressure.

Yoter, Try contacting your local county extension agent or contact TPWD and try to talk to a wildlife biolgist. In most cases low light conditions mean slow growth.

Listen to Ranchman, wait a while to get some moisture in the ground, also rye grass seed is cheap and I have seen deer and hogs walk past the feeder to get to it once it comes up.The beauty of RG is you can broadcast by hand on bare dirt and if-when the rain comes it will come up,it also likes shade. Its maybe $25 a 30lb.bag.It will thrive in moist bottomland.

Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it.

Oats and rye grass both do well in the shade. Get a soil sample done to get the best results whatever you decide.
