All right guys I'm at the lease bore sighting my buddies rifle. 6.8 ruger, I'm dead on horizontal, and hitting 3 inches below my point of aim at 25 feet. What do I need to do to my elevation to be on at 100 yards. I thought it was 2 inches above my point of aaim at 25 feet is close at 100?

25 feet or 25 yards?

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it illegal for sober people to own cars.

The point of aim should be approx 2" ABOVE point of impact at 25 feet.

If your dead on at 25feet you will be high at 100 yds, how high don't know but guess close to a foot.

If you want to be two inches high at 100 yards, you need to be just about dead on at 50 yards---depending on the height of the scope mount. If you are dead on at 50 yards, then it makes sense to be about an inch or so LOW at 25 yards.

If you think about it, from 50 yards in, the closer the target the lower your point of impact should be. Naturally, if your scope is mounted two inches above the centerline of the receiver then the bullet exits the muzzle two inches below the line of sight.

If you're hitting two inches above the line of sight at 25 feet, then you could expect to be hitting about two feet high at 100 yards, more or less.

If you want a 100 yard zero, pull the bolt, sandbag the rifle, sight through the bore at an object at 100 yards and adjust the scope to "see" the fixed object. That is old school bore sighting, and it works.

I've bore sighted many rifles this way and the last three have been 3" point of impact vs. point of aim at 100 yards. I can have a good shooting rifle sighted in with 2 or 3 rounds.

This is exactly the way I've always done it as well. It always works, my eyes are always with me and they dont suffer from dead batteries. cheers

Initial post indicates its a Ruger in 6.8mm. Probably not a bolt action.

So what, if it's an AR! Push two pins, remove the upper, pull the bolt and proceed like I said. (bore sighting is waaaay eaiser if you have a bipod for the forend) I've got a 3-9 x 32mm on my .223 AR that I boresighted with the same technique I described.

In part 2 of my thread I explain bore sighting, and leveling the scope with pics.

Andrew is right on all accounts. I did not read his original comment correctly and took it to mean the point of impact should be two inches above the point of aim at 25 feet, but that is not what he said. I missed the hint that the rifle is not a bolt-action as well.

At least there's one guy on his toes around here!

If you're shooting the bottom one, just duct tape a toilet paper tube to the top.
