a springfield 1911 a1 mil spec. already has a wilson beavertail and wilson commander hammer. I want to put night sights on but I cant find out what size stake the front is any gunsmiths care to chime in with info smile

Sure. The bastiges use a "medium-tenon" front sight that is .082", which is about .018" narrower than a wide-tenon sight.

So, the night sight options are get a wide-tenon sight and narrow it to fit or cut a dovetail.

Note: staking a front sight with a tritium vial absolutely needs to have a skirted sight and use of a jig.

This raises a question to me: are there some 1911s that are easier to change out sights than others? Your answer above makes me think the Springfield may not have a standard sized dovetail, etc?

There is no standard size, really. There's just more common and less common.

Guns with dovetailed front sights are infinitely easier, and the sights are more secure.

Springfield uses a 60-degree .330" dovetail.
