Well only one deer showed up this weekend but it was a buck I had seen on the cameras that was coming out during the morning and evening and I had hopes for him being my son Kyle's first deer. At 8:10am yesterday morning he got his first deer - a 4pt forkhorn. He used a Savage 99E .243 to take him at a little over 70 yards. He didn't quite hit his point of aim (shoulder) but did good enough hitting him in the spine and dropping him in his tracks. Couldn't convince him to field dress him for some reason You only get one first deer, and for it to come on your first hunt and to be with your Dad - well, thats why I started hunting again - to pass on the same experiences my Dad did with me. He wanted to Euro mount it. It may be the only Euro mounted 4-pt buck ever but it will be special for us. Here he is shortly before his nap and then with my happy son. My 5 year old wasn't as happy when Mom told him what his big brother had done...said deer are too "qute" and that he was going to teach them to bite Kyle next time... I'll post up some more pics later - lots of bucks have shown up on my cameras the last 2 weeks but most are still nocturnal. It doesn't appear the rut is on at my place yet (Young County) - hell for the first time I have bucks showing up in bachelor groups even. Earl

Congratulations on a great deer and an even better hunt. Spine shots are great. The deer don't take a single step. Wait to you know you hit one and have it run off on you and you can't find it for the thick brush. Spine shots ARE neck shots...just a little further back.
Congratulations on your first deer.
Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

thats awesome!
i'm sure he will remember it for the rest of his life.
my first "real" buck came when i was 12 years old. my uncle had bought about 200 acres outside of hondo which had a few abandoned deer blinds in it. he dropped me off in one before daylight. no feeder, but we did sprinkle some corn out. i fell asleep and around 8 o'clock i woke up and looked out the window, and i saw a buck bounding down the trail. i threw my gun up as he moved behind a cactus, with only the white of his neck showing through the leaves, which was enough for me to shoot at. seconds later i had my first buck, which btw, looked alot like your sons deer.
i'm glad you got to share that moment with your son, i never had the privilege of hunting with my own father.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Nice first buck.. Congrats to your son... I hunt North of Jacksboro and your sons buck was typical of all we saw.. very few does , small bucks. The big ones are still moving at night according to the cameras..Pigs are in full force at daylight and dark however.. Come on cold weather.. Steve

Hey Steve, glad to know my place isn't the only one like that then. Like your place I can see them on the cameras (and some very nice ones) but they just aren't moving much during the day.
I talked to someone at the hotel I stayed at in Graham that said they shot a 10-ptr chasing does but the bucks where I'm at north of Loving sure don't seem to be chasing them yet. I've got pics from at least 3 different bachelor groups in the last 3 days.
The buck I think is this ones daddy has shown up on the cameras. Too bad he isn't the one that walked out, I didn't know he was around. A big old 5-ptr with no brow tines just like this fork horn.
Aside from him I had 4 new 8-ptrs and a big 10 show up on the cameras in the last week - only once or twice have they ventured out during daylight hours though.

Yeah, I was thinking that. May want to think twice about mounting it.

congrats to your son. The first buck experience is always great.
I avoid Dick's and hope they fold.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

For those that were concerned, don't forget not all counties have antler restrictions. This buck was taken in Young County which does not have AR, it is a one buck county so this is his one buck for the year. I have a little more sense than to 1) take an illegal animal (period) and 2) post up about it and have it mounted! This is the buck I wanted him to take as it will in my view never have brow tines and will pass that trait on down the line. It is being processed and the Euro mount done in the same county as shot and tagged (Young) at Clear Fork Country in Graham so no issues with anything not being on the up and up. In fact, he was the third deer dropped off that morning - there is another photo of my son and his buck here (3rd picture): http://www.clearforkcountry.com/graham-texas-deer-pictures.htmlThanks for the concern though. Earl

Nice buck and a good shot. Good times are never forgotten. Tell him congrats, and look for some good eating.

Earl, My apologies. I hope I did not offend you.
I remember my first buck being about that size when I was 10 years old (only shot does up until then). I shot it with My .223 and it jumped and ran so my dad shot it with a 30-06 and it plopped over.
When we got to it it had 2 holes in it - mine, right through the heart, and his right through the head - blew the rack off so didn't get to mount it.
That was 28 years ago.
