just put a used bowtech guardian in layaway for 400 bucks, this is my first bow and I was wondering if it was decent. also any website or tools I could use to learn the basics of the sport of bow hunting would be a big help. I've never been hunting with a bow or know too much about all the different components but I'm super excited for this upcoming season and I want to be ready.

pretty decent bow especially for a first.. look at archerytalk.com, tons of info there... now I don't mean to be the a-hole but from what you stated there is no way you could be ready to bowhunt ETHICALLY by the start of the season, if at all this year... just one opinion

Welcome to the fire!! That bow will be an awesome starter for you. Once you get it spend some time at a local pro shop and they can help you get dialed in. They can probably give you a few pointers that will make opening weekend go a bit smoother. You should have no problems at all getting ready by deer season. With the equipment nowadays the hardest part is just getting a deer in range. Get your bow tuned properly, practice as much as possible and get ready for an addiction!

When you are comfortable with known distance. Try shooting a 3D course and see how accurate you are then. That will tell you a lot.

the only thing I'm worried about is a string breaking and the arrow shooting through my forehead, should probably change the strings considering its used?

people can do what they want but tight groups on your target standing the same way in set conditions is completely different than hunting.. I learned that the hard way.. whatever you guys decide make sure to practice how you will hunt whether it's sittting, kneeling, elevated, or on the ground... all of those are alot differnt than standing in front of target and require different angles

again I'm not trying to talk down to anyone just don't want to see the "can't find my deer" threads that come from people not practicing the way they hunt

good luck to everyone

Where you located? When you say you put it in layaway, when do you actually put your hands on the bow? You need to go to a pro shop and make sure this bow is set for you, i.e. draw length, pounds, are your arrows for this bow etc.....

I've heard over the many years on this earth that some people feel you can't be ready this year for hunting with a bow, and I saw, well, anyway.....

If you already are a hunter, then some of the battle is already won. But, answer these questions and we will go from there....

Im in beaumont, south east texas, and its actually at the pawn shop that i work at. with layaway you cant leave with it til after you finish paying on it but considering i work there im pretty sure i can take it to have it looked at because they will know where to find me if i dont bring it back. that sounds like pretty good advice though,i appreciate it.

That is what I would do first. You don't want to spend that much money and then find out you can't shoot the bow until you put new string/cables on the bow, that you have to buy a new cam to adjust the draw length and so forth....

You might be able to find a new bow for about that amount, maybe a little more. And, then you want to think about a warranty, which you don't get on a used bow.

that is true,I'll update after I take it in and I'll go from there. not too many places around here that sell bows unfortunately so the selection is pretty slim. thanks again for the advice.
