I don't know if it is just me or the place I buy my dog food, but I swear my price per pound had gone up drastically since I bought Izzy 4 years ago. I do buy a more expensive "premium" dog food, but I am about to change. I thought the dog food size bags use to be 20 pound and 50 pound. Then they went to 20 and 40, then 18 and 40 and kept going down. I switched from Innova when the bags hit 15 and 30 pounds for the same price as they use to be for 20 and 50 pounds. You use to get a slight discount when you bought the 50 pound bag. Now the larger bag is twice the size of the smaller bag and twice the price. There is no discount for getting the bigger bag.

I guess the straw that broke the cammels back was last night when I bought the "Big" bag of Wellness dog food. I thought I was getting a 30 pound bag. I swear the price went up again. I got home and the bag was a 26 pound bag. Now guess what I paid for it.....................(dramatic pause)............$64 + tax for a 26 pound bag of food. I left there $112 later. I thought it was high, but I got some bones and treats. I didn't really pay attention until I got home. So I will be weaning her off of this food and onto another food with this bag.

That does seem a bit crazy and I agree they started screwing with stuff when they changed the sizes of the bags! We feed Taste of the Wild and TSC sells them in 15lb/30lb bags. Somewhere on your side of town there was a feed store that sold it cheaper than TSC but I couldn't justify the drive for the savings.

Might check that food out, I have been very happy with it. But there are a lot of good foods out there for much less than $64 a bag.

I did use Taste of Wild when Izzy was younger. She was really hard to put weight on (until I fixed her) so I changed food. I may try it again.

Think its going up on just about any brand you buy. I know mine has went up. Then to top it off my vet went up on her prices. Its the first increase in probably 10 years so I can't complain to much. I guess even vets need a raise every now and then.

The best value for your money is the breeder program. A couple of guys get together and buy it a pallet at a time. You can get a 44lb bag of Eukanuba 30/20 for $32.00. A 40lb bag (can't get the 44lb bag in stores) at the pet store is around $55.00 with tax.

I use Purina Pro Plan and my dogs do great on it. I save the weight circles send them in and get cash back wich inturn lowers the cost of the dog food. They also put out a monthly coupon sometimes its 3 dollars of then sometiems its 7 dollas off the bag of dog food. I get it from TSC and they have been the cheapest that I have seen.

Some manufactures actually have coupons for their dog food if you go to the website and print them off.

I use the same for my pup. Around here shockingly Petsmart is the cheapest place. I did print a coupon off their site too. Is there a link on the cash back thing?

I went to Purina Dog Chow for the summer, and Cracker looks as if she's still gaining weight. She gets some scraps, and begs for bread on my patio, while I'm doing lunch.

You can google dog food coupons and rebates. Same for ammunition.

Thanks a bunch for the heads up. I have a coupon site, but there are too many. I tried your method with the specific dog food and this is what I got;

Since the gubberment subsidized the ethanol industry, corn (which is the primary feed for cattle, chickens and hogs) has skyrocketed, forcing increases across the board on meat. You'll notice that at the supermarket. Naturally, since dog food often contains both - it had to increase as well. There has been a bill introduced before congress to halt this subsidy. We'll see.

Update on this bill:
The Senate failed to kill ethanol subsidies on June 15th (I haven't been keeping up too well, I guess). However, it was only 5 billion dollars a year of tax dollars. Not a big deal for us.

We feed our dogs Exclusive by PMI (Purina Mills Inc). They have quite a few different foods depending on what your needs are. Our female German Shorthair Pointer (that just weaned a litter of 8 pups) has been on the Performance Adult dog food which has all natural ingredients (including fresh meat) and a good source of protein, carbs, & glucosamine for joints. You can check out what retailers around you carry it by going to www.exclusivepetfood.com. The retailers around us that carry this offer a buy 6 bags and get the 7th for free through Exclusive. We pay roughly $40 for a 35lb. bag. Something to look into at least. We have had no problems keeping weight on our female even while nursing and b/c of all the natural ingredients there isn't much waste and she doesn't consume crazy amounts either. Hope this helps! smile

50 lb. bag for 20 dollars, dont remember what it is called. Its a red bag. Before you guys jump on me about buying the cheapest i could find, i did compare nutritional values and it was the same (within a %) as all the expensive stuff. I get it at petco, thats the only place i have seen it. My dogs are fine and they really like it. The only food they like better is scraps.

I'm on the breeder program and the kennel program. When they run a special I can get it for $30 for a 44lb bag delivered. I buy a pallet at a time. My dogs do better on it then pro plan.

Anybody try Loyal by Nutrina? I just got a 40lb bag for $32 at TSC. I have been feeding it to my DD since he was a pup and so far I have no complaints.

I have a friend who is a Loyal rep. You usually see him at the Hunters Extravaganza with his DD representing Loyal.

I've been feeding Outlaw and like it real well. I think I gave twenty dollars for fifty pounds in June. Good local Texas company.

Angie deos it the right way. The manufacturer does $5/off per bag on the breeder bags sometime if you buy a whole pallet. Its the best deal in the industry imo. I know alot of folks get 2 or 3 people together and split a pallet. It just has to be all delivered to one loaction.

PMI here as well but I use the Red Flannel out of season and move to Exclusive around October thru March. My GSP is used as a guide at www.ggsportsman.com until April.

The Red Flannel is $38 for 50#; Exclusive is $40 for 35#. Dogs do great on both.
