I was going through a bunch of my hunting stuff and came across a 98 Mauser action and receiver that someone gave me years ago and I forgot about. I was smart enough to wrap it in a silicon oil rag and put it in an old ammo can. It's been indoors so no rust or corrosion.
Now the question, what do y'all think I ought to do with this action. Possibilities are endless. Sell it? Trade it? Build something? Hmmmmm?

always good to find something you forgot about......and a 98 mauser action even better, I would build something on it, hard to find a better platform.

You should sell it to me for an unreasonably low price...

What year is it and does it have the place of manufacture stamped across the top of the receiver ? Are all of the parts of the same serial number ? You could have a very special action...

I've got one custom FN Mauser actioned 7mm Rem Mag, a Sako .264 Win Mag, .300 Wby Mag, .308 Norma Mag, Browning .270 Win, a Ruger .243 Win, Kimber .22-250, several "black guns" in .223 and .308, plus a bunch of plinkers.
I just can't decide what I'd want or need to build. I must give this much consideration. Everything but the Browning .270 sits in the safe most of the time.
Gimme an idea for something original but no wildcats. I don't want to get back into reloading.

I found an AK in my closet when we moved. I had gotten it in a trade years back and forgot all about it. It was like Christmas.

7x57, 30-06, or .35 Whelen. You can't have too many .270s either...

I'd go with a 318 Westley Richards, a 338.06 AI or a 9.3 x 62. Shillen barrel with barrel band and leaf sights. Stock by Aya, Scope by Swaro maybe a 1.5 x 6 with quick detach mounts.

I'm kind of liking the .338/.35 cal. something-or-other in a non-magnum case. Big round that'll blow up pigs with ease. We might be on to something here.

I've been thinkin a .260 or .280 Rem or AI for mine, but who knows (would the short-action .260 cause me problems?). Rust down the bore of the original step-contour 8mm barrel, so i havent even shot it. What year is it and does it have the place of manufacture stamped across the top of the receiver ? Are all of the parts of the same serial number ? You could have a very special action... If your asking me this question, yes, numbers matching (OR11004), unsure of year. Manufacture mark says "zbrojovka brno, a.s.vz.24"

The .260 would work but you will have to make sure the rounds are all the way in the back of the magazine. If it were mine I'd do .280AI.

Give the action a cartridge its comfortable with....8x57 Mauser. It can do everything a 30-06 can do. After all, the 98 action was designed to shoot it! My second choice would be 7x57 Mauser.
I LOVE the 200 gr. Speers on hogs....plays hell!
I'm building a 7.65x53 Argentine Mauser on my Columbian action. Can't wait until its ready.

I'm building a 7.65x53 Argentine Mauser on my Columbian action. Can't wait until its ready. THIS RIGHT HERE!!!! Man, you are speaking my language, I'm working on finishing up my new (to me) all purpose truck rifle. k98 barreled action in 8mm JS Mauser (factory 43 1940 vintage), just drilled and tapped it, old Marble's Express rear sight, barrel mounted sling swivel, Bold trigger, Boltman modified bolt handle, all nestled in an OLD walnut stock I picked up from somewhere. Trying to decide if I want to strip and refinish this stock or leave it as it is. I LOVE all things old school Mauser. This rifle (when it was in the old military stock) seems to like 175 grain Sierra PH bullets over a healthy dose of IMR 4064.

I'd love to find a '98 like that and build a short barreled carbine length HD use companion to my CZ 550 9.3x62 American....or even a wore out Wallyworld Winchester donor. What a great do all round for anything anywhere from hogs to ??? Even the Russki's are supposed to have developed a depleted Uranium boolit on the 9.3x62 round capable of disableing an Abrams tank! as the round is as accurate as a 308.
My CZ shoots sub moa groups out of the box despite needing a 'glass job when the weather is wet and the forend walks a bit snug on one side.
I've been using Speer 270 gr'ers at max speeds on the last several WTails with less meat damage than my 270 ever gave me...and gave one young gentleman a 35' magic carpet ride that left him looking more like a rolled updoodle bug than I had expected with a .36 caliber entry with a quarter sized exit...and NO ...ZERO ...meat damage! Easy to find components - look at Graf and their selection of US made boolitz from Speer, Barnes, Hornady and Nosler...plus all the African grade stuff, easy to load using RL15, easy recoil levels about like a 180 gr '06 and up to 4000lbs of knock down energy.
But don't take my word for it ...look at the last Nosler manual's description of the round's performance. Ron

Love those 98 actions. I own a custom 98 mauser rifle in 30-06 that's my go to deer rifle. Very solid gun.

I own multiple 98 mausers, and they are absolutely great actions. I like 7x57 wich will be next build.
Those of you who do not stand behind our millitary, please stand in front of it!!!
