Walking through Walmart this afternoon and I made the customary stop in fishing and hunting. I glance the ammo cabinet. I noticed a new to me ammo brand called TulAmmo. Any opinions? 20 rds. of .223 55gr.FMJ were $4.97. 50 rds. of .40S&W 180gr. FMJ were $12.97. Any opinions on this brand of ammo? The box says made in Russia.

I just tried a box the other day. Out of 15 rounds I had one that tumbled and it was extremely hard to eject the case. I'd avoid it and go with Monarch from Academy.

The primer had a really bad crater on it.

Very likely steel jackets in the 223 ammo, copper plated to make it look like it's copper. Some folks don't care, but no one but the eastern European makers have gone that route.
I prefer not to put steel down any barrel worth keeping.

It's made by the Tula Cartridge Works, same place that makes Wolf. As others have said, dirty but goes bang. Just fine for blasting ammo...

Works fine for the three calibers I've tried and I have never had a malfunction or jam. Just never understood the dirty thing. I clean my weapons after each use. What difference does it make?

That ie fine if you don't shoot much when you shoot, it you run a few hundred to a few thousand at a sitting the cheap dirty ammo won't cut it . But if you don't really care if you hit what you are shooting at and you dont shoot high volume they should be adequate. Varget tula makes the monarch steel case as well, but privi partisan makes the brass care stuff and it is good target ammo

it sucks and would never recommend using it in a bolt gun

My weapons tell me when they are dirty, and not a one of them shoots it's best "Clean".

In my case, I never understood the "I clean my rifles after every use" mentality unless the performance warrants it.

Steel case Monarch is Barnaul, not Tula. Same as Brown Bear, at least in rifle ammo.

Point taken. Don't usually do a "few thousand". Few hundred works for me. Guess that's why I have never had a problem.

I bought some Tula in 7.62X39 and ran a couple hundred rounds through my CZ 527.

I had about half a dozen rounds fail to go bang when I pulled the trigger. I checked the primers and the firing pin indentations were plenty deep.

It's cheap, but I won't buy it again.
