hey guys i got out of reloading about 6 years ago and was wanting to know if there is a way to check it to make sure it is still good. yes i have lit it with a lighter and it does burn. are there any other tools or anything to check it. i am moving across the country and dont want to drag it around with me anymore.

If has been stored in a cool dry place it should be good. Powder will degrade over time and the odor will change. Good powder will have an ether smell to it in most cases. I have some powder that is over 15 yrs old and it is still good.

I'm with you. Storage is everything, if kept in a dry, cool spot I don't see why it wouldn't keep for a extended period of time. I know reloaders that have powder 10+ years old and it shoots fine.

Large temperature swings really seem to kill powder (and primers). Keep it in a well temperature controlled area and you should be good to go. I still use powder that I've had for 12+ years and it's good to go.

I've got some powder that is 15 years old and I'm still using it.

Well, I'm shooting WWII surplus 4831 that is 60+ yrs old. Odor is still the same, and chrono-ed velocity is still the same as in the 1970's, when I first started measuring velocities.

Some guys say that they just store it out in a shed that's not even temperature-controlled and as long as they keep it dry, it's fine. I am not advocating that, but maybe they're right. I do wonder what the chronograph would say, though.
