But really a 308 is best because......

Was wondering when this would come up! Shucks, buy whatever YOU think works for YOU. Just make sure you can hit what you're aiming at.. I've got a 30.06 I've had over 30 years, handload for it and then shot some factory stuff right behind my load that opened the group about 3/4 in. Can buy this stuff anywhere anytime even at the gas station in Cimarron Colorado. Bunch of deer and a few Elk met their maker at 250 to 300 yds without a problem. My backup gun was a Savage 99 lever action .308 and it's proved itself too! I've got several other rifles/calibers, but today when I get the opportunity to hunt I close my eyes and grab - always come up with my Savage .308.
( and I only carry 1 cartridge for each - you believe that don't cha )

Eveything I own is sighted for max range. Put the cross hairs on it and from 0 to about 320 yards it's in the kill zone. I'd put more money on a good range finder now especially since my eyes ain't what they used to be!

If you like 7mm mag that's Ok. If you like 270 or ???? that's Ok too! Find what works for you, buy it, use it, & be a happy camper...... I don't dislike any of 'em.
(I'm not real fond of pickled beets, but I won't get upset if you brought a jar to camp)

Last year I was considering a 257 weatherby magnum. I had sceduled a hog hunt in the kerrville area and was to meet the ranch/land owner in the afternoon. So a friend of about 20 years and I left my house in denton county at 5am with the intent to stop at every sporting goods store possible and check for 257wm ammo. Every single store we stopped in from stephenville to junction had 257wm ammo(we took 377 to junction). My point is, buy the gun you want the ammo is out there for most factory rounds.

My vote and it just my opinion would be for the 25-06, shoots nice and flat, ammo is cheap and available and its chambered in the Remington 700 you seem to like. Oh and it kicks less than either the 270 or 7mm Rem Mag. Just a thought theres not much diffence between the 270 and the 7mm Rem Mag one shoots a 150 grain .277 bullet at about 2900 fps the other shoots a 160 .284 bullet at about 2900 fps, I think it just boils down to personal preffrence, either is more than you really need to kill a average sized texas buck at 300 yard or less.

I'll take a 7-mag any day. The 7-mag is kinda the red headed step child of the magnum family. Due to certain weaker actions it was chambered in, during it's youth, they had to keep it's pressures down. Where it really stands it's ground is with hand-loads. If i was to choose one caliber for all my hunting needs, it would be the 7-mag. With bullet weights from 115 to 175, it carries a broad paddle.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

So you want to replace a heavy 30-06 with a lighter .270 or 7mm.

I'd go check out a Tikka T3 Hunter or Deluxe in .270. Lightweight, smooth action, and accurate for a great price.

I have both (7Mag and .270) I have hunted with the 7Mag since it was my first deer rifle some 20+ years ago. I have never had a deer go more than 30 yds after taking a hit in the lungs. All but three fell within 5 yds or less.
This year I bought a .270 mainly becasue I wanted a black and stainless gun. I have taken one hog and one buck with it. The hog DRT and the whitetail made it 30-35 yards.
Both will be fine, so fine that I think you should by both of them just so you never have to second guess your purchase.

270 wsm or 300wsm. 300wsm has awesome ballistics
I have 270 wsm in Rem model 7 and it is probably my favorite
