I was invited to go on a hunt up in Northern Mississippi in December, and I had a few questions - maybe some of you have hunted there? The hunt is in Desoto County 22 miles south of Memphis...

1. How's the population? How's the game compare to Texas?

2. The out of state residency rules say you can take a legal buck (4 pts or greater and zone 1 no spread rule)... But for does, you either have to be the land owner, or the leasee... Obviously, I am not the land owner, but if I am invited there, what proof would you need to say you leased the hunting rights?

3. Mississippi does not allow baiting/feeding... But they do allow doe scents... Do you guys know those doe scents work?

4. The law says you can't use any electronic calls, but says nothing about moth calls. Anyone know the rule on that?

Thanks in advance guys

Mouth calls are fine. Scents will work good at times, but their rut is the end of December/first of January. As far as does goes hand your buddy a dollar for the "lease" and then your legal. I have hunted many times about 1 1/2 to 2 hours north east of Jackson and the deer herd is pretty healthy. There seems to be a lot of if its brown its down in that area. Good numbers but low qualities.

Good Luck.

I have hunted on a place called Catfish Point outside of Scott/clevland MS...I can tell you that they have a ton of deer and there are some monsters...I hunted with my buddy from college (who is a member) and he shot a 8pt main frame that scored 143....It weighed 245 lbs. They shot a doe that weekend I was there and it weighed 200lbs..no chit! We saw tons of deer and alot of turkey. I was a guest so I had to hunt outside the levee for a doe/buck...I never killed a deer but had a few opps. It resembles my east tx to some degree..hardwoods and river/creek bottom! I am going to try to make it in the next couple of yrs. There is about 15k acres and they have 70 or so members. Thats what I am not huge fan....I like having 1600 acres with a few of my good friends....dont have the strict rules and I can hunt where ever I please! TXphantom..hunt long and hard and you will get you a deer and its going to be bigger than most TX deer! Good luck and good hunting!

Awesome replies - thanks so much! You guys are a great help. My friend that's being gracious enough to have me out as a guest told me several things:

1. The brush is thick, but we'd have some sort of shooting lane

2. Said he usually takes a deer or two every year, and passes on alot

I looked up cleveland, it's not THAT far from where I will be... I will be near Nesbit/Hernando.

Speaking of which, I got to call Walmart in Hernando to see if I can get the license late that Friday night i arrive or I should order it online. (The system won't let u order it >30 days in advance)...

Thanks again, and if you can add anything else, I'm all ears - I'm still a newbie to this!

I deer hunt in MS. Between Durant and Vaiden. There are some big deer to be taken it just depends on what kind of hunters you have around you.
Hope you packed some warm clothes!!!!!!

Oh yea and the limit is 3 bucks 5 does. Only 1 deer per day.
