Let me get my calculater. I think im going to go with the man on here with the most experience at 18" and add a little, so that means you would have to have Chaps. Im 6'4", I just measured and 18" is right at the start of my knee pit just above the calf. So if you are a regular ht. person at 5'8-6'2 a large snake is going to hit you directly behind the knee.
But Patrick, what if that snake was only a foot or two away from him?! Whose to say it couldn't have struck a lot higher. Who knows...If I get bit I'll just throw some dirt on the bite and go along my way! Snake boots are for Women!

I talked to a man this morning and he says he wears boots 18" tall,he pointed on his leg to where the top comes and it was just about in the bend of his knee, mine are 16" and wish they were a little taller. My problem is i'm not sure i can hear a rattlebug go off.

Good question!
When i was with AMBUCKS, we held the Rattle Snake Round-Up. I was one of the handlers in the center pit. One of my tricks was called the "Kiss of Death". I would take the biggest rattler i could find in the pit and put him on the table. With my snake hook i would gently ease him to the side and get him to lift his head up. I would put my hook under his head and not only get him as high as i could, I'd also get him as far out over the table edge as i could. Then i would replace the hook with my hand, using only 1 finger directly under his head. At that point i would slowly bend down and kiss him on the head. It all looks spooky and get the crowd going, but the principle behind it makes it pretty safe. Snakes rarely strike in an upward motion, usually it's a falling and extending movement. The key to my trick was getting him so extended that i could actually feel his weight on my finger. Once he got his weight there, for him to strike he would have to recoil and strike, giving me plenty of time to get the hell out of the way. Usually they just fell of the table.

Wearing snake boots is cheap insurance.
The problem many folks do not understand, is that many time a rattle will bite a person, but will not inject any venom, a Dry Bite.
That is why the advice from the Emergency medical folks any more, is to keep the person calm and get them to the Dr., no cutting/sucking/tourniquets/ice, any of that. Lots of damage has been done to folks by well meaning aid givers.
One of the reasons Hwy_mans bites may have only swollen, were because they were dry bites and the swelling was cause dby the infection created by the bacteria from the snakes mouth.
When in doubt, find you a comfortable pair of snake boots, buy them and wear them.
I have had more than my share of run-ins with rattlebugs and have managed to never have been bitten. It may happen one day, but I will take that chance instead of being uncomfortable wearing the boots.
Several folks that hunt with us wear them, and for our March or later hunts, I recommend them. JMO.

most people must understand that just because you have snake boots does not make them invincible..Iam still very cautious where I go and keep my eyes peeled all the time...I have seen others walk around not paying attention to what they are doing just cause they are wearing snake boots..I look at it this way the boots give me time to make a smart decision as to which way to move before being struck if it comes to that...

Beck Boots. I have three pair. 18in tops. They are not cheap, but they will last you a life time, custom fit to your feet and calf. I've been bit at by two rattles. The boots work.

Welcome to the THF. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I am sure those boots are excellent quality, but there are cheaper forms of protection, that will work just as well, even though they may not be as stylish. I have been having close calls with rattlebugs since the 1960's, and will continue taking my chances. I have found slowing down just a little and paying attention works wonders, and while I have been scared many times, I have not been bitten.
