Help me out... I've been planning a long range bolt build and was talking with a buddy a couple weeks back who has always had senderos. He loves them. He did bring up the 5R in our conversation, and then he got another call and we had to cut our conversation short. I have not heard much about the 5R's... then I see that other post and it's all anyone is talking about. What are the differences b/t the Sendero and the 5R? Is it just the sharper tools that they use? Price looks to be about the same... which way would you lean and why? Thanks!

Depends on what you want it to do. With the 5R you are caliber limited. I do like the finish better on the 5R rifles. There is lots of info on the net abour 5R rifling. Some like it and some do not. Most of the top benchrest shooters do not use it.

The 5R style rifling is a lil controversial a lot of people claim its the best thing since sliced bread, yet if you call any of the top barrel makers they will tell you testing shows no difference. In your shoes it'll depend on what caliber you want as stated above the 5R limits you, although I've never heard of a Sendero that wouldn't shoot.

I have a 5r mil spec and it out shoots my sendro but it's not by much. I do like the look of the sendro's better than the 5r's. Both are great guns and can't go wrong. I read a lot on the 5r's and like dee said most top barrel makers tests show no difference.

What's funny is I talked fairly lengthy with Krieger about the advantages/disatvantages, well I order the 5r version then, well thank god it takes months to get a barrel cause my gunsmith said he wouldn't install a 5r.

Caliber is the limiting factor. If I am not mistaken, the 700 5R only comes in .223, .308. and .300 win mag. The sendero comes in several including 7mmRUM and 7STW. both of which are very good flat shooting rifles.
I bought my dad a Sendero in 7mmRUM for his 50th birthday. He loves it and I can attest that it will shoot sub-moa.

Thanks for the info. I had a 300 RUM and loved the round.... Only the gun was not as accurate as I wanted. (it was the lower end Remington) I know most go with the 7.62 when building bolt guns but I would love to have a gun that would shoot that 300 rum very accurately. I agree with the looks too... Love the stainless flutes on the Sendero.
I know the rounds are harder to find and more expensive, but as much as I will be shooting it, I don't see that being an issue. Plus I've been wanting to get into reloading anyway.
Think I might go that direction.

My understanding it that the 5R is a milspec designed for 175gr 7.62 pills. This means it probably wasn't designed to be used for any other caliber and performance in other calibers would probably be unreliable....although my 5R shoots a greater variety of load combos than my 10 twist .308 gas gun. But maybe that's the "gas gun" mechanics at play, IDK. More importantly, I don't care, LOL. Any gun that shoots .5 moa is good enough for me to be perfectly happy with.
IMO, barrel and bullet designs have gotten to the point where any of the top recommendations are going to yield better results and have far more potential than dern near anyone of us could possibly make happen on paper, especially if you handload.

The 5R term and rifling design was pioneered by Boots Obermeyer, the technical theory is that the canted rifling is less stressful on the bullet when it contacts the lands. I do know that it's not recomended in the high velocity light weight bullet calibers, the barrel makers that offer them specify what calibers and twist they are offered in for this reason. Another thing to consider as of last year no one in benchrest even used the 5R rifiling and no records had been set with one.

the other manufacture that I know of using 5R rifling is Thompson Center. The ICONs and ventures have it.
Boots Obermeyer pretty much pioneered it here but it is not new. The Russians have been using it for years in some rifles.

The R stands for Russian. Its become more marketing gimmick than anything. Either will shoot well
