I am looking to buy my first (and hopefully not last) AR-15. My budget is from $700-$900. Could anyone give me some advice on what would be the best buy for my budget and may some tips on what to look for? I already know that I want a .223 with around a 16" barrel and would like to add a quad rail with different optics and lights. I just need to know what manufactor is the best for the buck.

I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

Have to agree with Spikes being the best bang for the buck.
As far as what to look for.......main thing is get a 5.56 chamber so you can shoot 5.56 and 223. I would also go with 1:7 twist.

Brand to me does not matter as much as it does to others. I would be happy with a $650 Bushmaster and a used EOTech if it were my first AR. Spikes are solid, but will also eat up all his budget and the differences for a plinker will not be noticeable.

I agree on the 5.56, but depending on what he is doing I somewhat disagree on the twist rate. On premium higher grain ammo the 1:7 is very versitile, but on a first time plinker shooting surplus and cheaper WWB ammo 1:9 would be a better choice.

Just give Morgan at DallasShootingSupplies a shout and he can set you up.

But if he ever decided to hunt with it he would be out of luck with the higher grain hunting rounds. And my Spikes 1/7 groups 55 gr cheap ammo fine also.

Unless my research really failed me the 1:7 should stabilize anything in the mid 40's up to the mid to upper 70's.

Spikes have good reviews and the S&W flat top version can be found for $600-$700. They are well built and a great price.

Im mainly going to be hunting hogs with it You'll definately want to get with Dallasshootingsupplies Morgan and talk about ammo choice in 5.56, it's pretty important hunting hogs. I think he used 62gr green tips and head shots.

Im mainly going to be hunting hogs with it Then I'd suggest a 1:7 twist and get you some Black Hills 77 gr OTM.. Then, open fire & kill 'em all!
I really hate to do what I am about to do, because it will be very painful for you.

When you say "best bang for the buck" it would be Spikes Tactical hands down !! They are the quality of BCM, Colt, LMT and other quality rifles but with the price tag of a DPMS ! I would suggest going with the midlength gas system vs teh carbine as its smoother shooting and has less felt recoil !

My 1/7 twist Bravo Co. barrel shoots 55gr as good as 75gr stuff. Get the 1/7, it will give you the most versatility.

I know a guy that bought a Bushmaster M4 profile carbine from Academy. The same day he purchased a 4-12X50mm scope to put on it. I asked him why he didn't opt for the optics ready carbine with the low profile gas block and he said that he didn't like the way it looked!!! You talk about an awkward looking gun.

They assemble some top notch gear and they have outstanding customer service.
