Looking at buying a new hunting rifle. Something that if I want to hunt ELK or Bear I can as well. Currently looking at the Tikka T3 300 win mag. What do you all think? Anyone using 300 win mag?
Thanks Ron

I think its a great choice that will serve you well and could be the last big game rifle you ever had to buy.

As BMD said the TTSX in 165gr would cover just about any thing you want to hunt, but when hunting deer make sure and aim for the shoulder blade so that it can open up and do what it should

If I had to get one rifle I would get the Winchester M70 extreme weather.

Can't go wrong with .300 Win mag. It will cover all the big game in North America and lots more in Africa if you choose to use it also. .300 RUM is another great choice. I have seen both in use first hand on deer in Texas and both performed well. I do not have either one but the .300 Win mag is next on my to buy list. Rifle is what you like. Go to a gunshop and look at several. Dury's in San Antonio is a great stop.

I've been hunting with a 300 Win Mag (Rem 700 Sendero) for yrs. and LOVE it. You can't go wrong. I hand load, and shoot hornady 168gr A-Max Molly. It's serious medicine on WT and hogs. rifle

My vote would be 300 win mag. As stated above it is enough gun for American big game and also the ammo it easy to find and is modestly prices compaired to other calibers of that size range.

Never killed a bear, but my moose and elk have all been one shot kills. I did shoot a doe in Texas with it. The opposite shoulder was a mess. If I ever use it in Texas again, I will choose a neck shot instead.

My 2 cents.. I'd do a .300WSM. A little better ballistics and knock down power, and slightly less kick. (I love mine)

But... All 30 caliber magnums are punishing rifles.. so shoot one before you put down the money. More than one guy has invested in a 300 Mag and put it up for sale the following season. And a .270 or 30-06 will kill elk and Whitetail all day long.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Ihada .300win mag...found it to much for Texas deer. Massive trauma an wasted meat on exit wounds...but der fell like hit in head witha maul. Went to .308 win....excelelnt Deer Rifle. Guess I got bored with its extremley accurate hole punching ability on targets ...cuase i know longer have it. I use the trusted and time proven .30-06. It a caliber thatwill do you justice throughout the entire lower 48. For my oddball I have a 6.5x55 SE(swede) It hammers deer and can take elk and is reported that the Scandinavians use a 160gr to drop Mooose. Im actually in a story written up in 2003 Nov issue of Gun List/Digest Having shot 2 Deer in South Texas with the 6.5x55 SE a great Antelope/Deer killer.
Hope you find a rifle you love for a life time.
Id also suggest you consider and or try if able a 7mm(7x57/.284) or 7mm Mag.
Also the .308 win has takena lot of Deer and Black bear as well.
Good luck with your choice.

If u r just looking, look at a Weatherby 300 mag. More bang and a little more shoulder thump. Will knock down almost animal.

Saying I grew weary of the tried and true '06 Id go a step further than the weatherby and just go with the Remington .300 ultra becuase it uses the .44 Jeffries case which is thicker walled case and does not need to be belted as the previous mags are.

I own a Ruger .300 win and its shooting .575" at 100 yds. Shot 2 doe and 1 buck with it last season all DRT. I have taken numerous hogs and even a few coyotes with my 300. Love the caliber and love the gun.
