I am currently hunting and killing hogs with my 223 ar, but I'm getting tired of the three or four wounded hogs escaping back to the woods. Im ready for an upgrade! 308, 6.8, 300 whisper..... What is everyone's personal preference?

I've got a 6.8 on order that should be done this week.. I chose it because its lighter than the AR10 platform and I can use an AR15 lower, but the ammo will cost more.. I don't shoot 1000 rds/month so cost of ammo won't be as big a deal for me..

Before you invest in one, see if you can find someone who has one you can shoot..

I couldn't tell you what to get for cost effectiveness, but I use a SCAR-17s (.308 win/7.62x51) and it knocks down stacked pigs like nobody's business!

Agree w/Zen. I've got a 7.62x39 and 5.56. No doubt the 7.62 will stop them quickly.

I love the x39 for close up pig hunting. It is a vastly underrated, often overlooked sporting cartridge. With the 8M3 bullet (wolf military classic hp) it flat tears em up. Search my 8m3 carnage thread if you want proof- shot one leg off!

I hunt in pretty thick woods and most shots are going to be less than 100 yards and once you shoot the pigs go everywhere and you rarely get a second shot.

So my gun of choice now is a 45LC with chamber reamed to .454 Casull in a single shot rifle with a 20" barrel.

It carries easy, and is fast aiming and knocks them down drt.

I've shot coyote, turkey and hogs and I can shoot hot loaded .45 Long Colts with 300 grain hornady XTP bullets, or the 454 Casull, with the same bullet, and they go down with either.

Been there done that with the SCAR heavy to expensive for laying down hogs.

Nah. Never too expensive when you're having a good time!

Remember though, even a large caliber is no substitute for shot placement. I'm going to convince folks one of these days to quit aiming foe the heart and start aiming for the hip. As Forrest Gump would tell you, it's awful hard to run when your legs don't work...

7.62x39, no reason to get exotic for the piggies, cheap and effective....... heck, where I hunt the only thing better would ber better is if they made a 12ga upper, load er up with 00buck and let em fly!!
