I have a savage 340d in 30/30 that came with a weaver side mount , when i pulled the mount off the refinish the action it had a small metal shim under the base. Now m looking to re scope the rifle with a newer Nikon fixed 4x scope . i lost the metal shim is this shim necessary or was it used on a older scope set up ?

More than likely, the scope did not have enough adjustment to the right and was shimmed to get on target. You'll have to mount one and boresight to know. Shim material can be had at any hardware store or from any beer can. I used a business card once.
