I have a two year old lab/weim. Dad was black lab and mom was silver weim. She is jet black with the shorter weim hair. A few days ago she started wimpering and I could see her coat had bumps all over her back and sides. I took her to the vet and they said not a food allergy b/c she didn't get sick. they gave her a anti inflam shot and put on anti-biotics and said to give benadryl as needed. Cleared up for two days but had another break out yesterday. I looked and saw mold was really high and grass moderate on the allergy forcast. we live near Austin. Just wondering if anyone else has had these problems and what it might be from. Thanks. By the way, if you ever get a chance to have a lab/weim...jump on it! she is fantastic except for this little problem recently.

I have been around several Weims that have some allergies. A lot of it is a skin reaction to grass. I have been using Atopica I got from the vet for the last six months and have not had a problem since. Before this I was taking my dog to the vets to get a steroid injection about every three months when his skin got so irritated. Atopica slows down their hyper active immune system so these allergies don't affect them so much. I still use benadryl when my dog flairs up but that has gotten less and less frequent. Not to mention since my dog isn't scratching so much anymore his hair has gotten much thicker and healthier.
