Ok this is my first ML. Wife bought me a TC Bone Collector for Christmas 2 years ago. Ive now got a Omega scope with Talley mount on it. I need some help getting it sighted and shooting it. I got alot of land to shoot on and hog hunt on to test it out. I hoping to have a trip to AK this year or I will go to CO. I want to become familiar with this thing but im starting from the bottom. I dont know bullets I do know I want to use pellet powders. So if any one can come help me I try to get us on a pigs to test it out. PM me with any help or if interested in getting together to shoot adn hunt some.

Sighting in a muzzleloader is very similar to any other gun, it just takes longer. Make sure you're consistent with the amount of powder you load, and clean the gun after every few shots. Pellet powder does make it easier to load, and more consistent than loose powder, but after you shoot it for a while, you might look at trying different loose powder loads to achieve different results (just like reloading cartridges). Luckily for me, I'm a pretty bad shot no matter what I use, so I can always blame it on the powder. smile
I would love to meet with you sometime and see if we can pop a couple of pigs. I'm pretty new to muzzleloaders myself, but I went deer hunting with mine last year. Unfortunately, I didn't get a deer, so I'm ready to try it out on something other than paper.
There are a few black powder shooters on this site, and you might also check out tradrag.com. It's a site that caters to "traditional" hunters with muzzleloaders and old-fashioned archery equipment.

You can not use scopes, pelletized powder or sabots in Colorado. 50 cal. or larger on Elk

I think that only applies during ML season only. I plan to use it during the regular season.

I've used pellets and loose.. and have better results with loose by far. As far as bullets go.. man the world is wide open. I shoot a Knight Disc 50 cal with a nikon Prostaff 3x9. My load is a Precision Bullet 260 grain sabot .44 and 125 grains of triple 7 powder FFG. I have no problems shooting out to 200 yards.. have not tried any farther no need. Be sure to swab after each shot and sight it like you would your regular rifle. You will have to experiment with differnet bullets and powder combos to get the right load for your gun. Once you find it.. you'll love it! Have fun shooting.. but most important be safe!

When it comes to BP, I go the lazy route and use the Triple 7's. Works great in my Knight 85 and Pro Hunter..

I bought my first muzzleoader 2 years ago, muzzleloaders are not very popular in S Texas where I hunt so I'm just getting into it. I only use it when I go to Nebraska at Christmas time and get a 3 day muzzleloader permit for whitetails. I purchased a Remington Genesis shooting 285 grain Barnes spitzer boattail hollowpoints with 100 grains Pyrodex pellets/open sights. I pulled it out of the box & didn't even have a chance to shoot it before the hunt. First morning of the hunt/first time fired/I downed a big fat Nebraska doe. Hit exactly where I was aiming at 70 yrds. That solid copper hollowpoint sabot from Barnes blew one HECK of a hole in her! Last year, I missed my only oportunity for a Husker deer. Attempted a 100 yrd off knee shot & flat out missed. I believe I'll be putting a scope on it this summer.....supposed to be able to putem' down up to 200 yrds from what I read, I'm not that confident with it yet. Smokepoles are fun though!

Just thought I'd share a few pictures of my first muzzleloader hunt in Nebraska. I'm posing with my doe & the buck on the floor there was taken by my father in law the next day. This was his first muzzleloader kill as well.

Well since I'm posting pictures I'll go ahead & post two more. Last summer the ken folk came down to Texas for vacation & I took them on their first Texas hog hunt. They wanted to use their muzzloaders. While waiting for the hogs to show up this nice bobcat walked out @ 60 yrds. He was walking & quartering away from us. He gave us just enough time to get the ol' smokepole out of the window & get the shot off. He actually gut shot him, but with that big 50 cal it killed him immediately. As you can see he's kinda skinny, that's because most of his innards came out of that big hole you see there. The other pic is of my brother in law's first pig, that was also his first muzzleloader kill. Good times.......

Before you go to Colorado with that ML be sure and check the rules. It has been several years since I have hunted there with a ML but when I did you could not use a scope or sabots.

Still can't use a scope, sabot, or pellets. But you can use powerbelt bullets as they don't classify them as sabot. Are you coming for elk?

I prefer loose powder over pellets (BH 209 1st choice) but pellets can be a life saver on follow up shots if needed (been thier) I use hornady .44 and .45 any where from 240 to 300 gr. They are cheap you can practice with them and they are proven on game. I have taken pigs, deer, no problem. I use crush rib sabots but have used others with like results. Sighting in is just like rifle, but make sure you stay consistent with everything you do especiallly loading. Just changing pressure on how you seat the bullet can change groups . practice practice. thier are all kinds of tricks and gadjets that are fun and make easy of shooting.

I have been around the world and back and america is where it is at

I have a remington 50cal genesis. I shoot pellets and use Barenes all copper bullets. Very accurate combo for me. I always clean the bore between shots to maintain the accuracy. I also have a Thompson 50cal muzzy. I shoot powder with that one and use Hornady bullets. My experiences have shown that cleaning the bore between shots will improve your accuracy. Find the right charge and bullet and you'll shoot like a sniper out to 200yds.
