I typically deer hunt with a .270. How does this caliber compare to the .270 and the .243?
Is it more like a 7mm? Or a .308?
I was unaware of the caliber, but would like to know if any of you guys deer hunt with them. What other game have you taken with it? ... Elk?

I've deer hunted with a 7MM .08 for years now. No intentions to change anytime soon. I love this caliber...plenty knock down power yet won't blow your shoulder off.
I've also hunted with a 6MM, .260, and a British .303. My 7MM .08 seems to do a LOT more damage than a 6MM or .260....and much better flight than a .303 but that's not saying a whole lot.

I hunt with a 7mm-08 Dropped a Buck with it in it's tracks this past year. Fine gun, no complaints. Easy ont he shoulder but can sling a 140 grainer out there pretty good. Dropping back to a load I am working on using a 120 gr. barnes tsx though. Go for it, you not going to gain anything over the 270 though.

7/08 plus 120gr TSX may just be the perfect combo!

I forgot to add to my previous post that I've killed two does in one shot with my 7MM .08. I had to wait twenty minutes to get them to line up at about 60 yards, but one bullet did the trick. First one dropped, second one made it twenty yards. Bullet exited the second doe as well.

Not sure I really think of this as ethical, maybe just me but I think it is a bad idea to wait and take this shot. I wouldn't do it and I shoot a .300 win with 168gr TTSX. Could I sure would I NO!

Well a 7-08 is a .308 that is just necked down to 7mm. It's plenty good medicine for deer and hogs! There are folks that have taken elk and sheep with the 'little seven' too! Its one of those rounds that just seems to drop critters with way more authority than it's bark and recoil would indicate!

Got one last year in a Remmy 700 SPS. Scary accurate right out of the box. Deadly on anything huntable that's walked out in front of it so far. I've dropped 6 sizeable hogs with it since January. I like it.

Longest shot I ever made was with a Model 7 7mm-08. How far? way too damn far and should have my butt kicked for being stupid. I was young and no one was around so I decided to fill my last tag. Doe was bedded across a canyon and she never got up. Unfortunatley, I went back to the house and got my Grandfather to help drag. What a dummy! When we got to the deer and he turned around and looked at the stand, the light came on that I just busted myself. That was a butt chewing.......

I have a 7 mag that I use the Remington Managed Recoil ammo in for the local deer and hogs. The ballistics are very close to a 7mm-08, the Managed Recoil being just a tad lighter. I love em! That 7mm-08 is a sweet round that IMHO is just about perfect for Texas game.

29+ years with a 7mm-08 as main go to gun. Yea I hunt with others but when it is time to go kill something it gets to leave the safe. 60+ deer taken with it and all but 2 were either DRT or fell within sight. The 2 that did not were shooters fault not the gun ot cartridge. I use that Remington 788 chambered in 7mm-08 as a loaner gun sometimes partly because it is very accurate and easy to shoot with a track record of easy game recovery, I know if they can shoot their results will be the same as mine.
Both the 270 and 7mm-08 deliver more punch to the game than the 243.

how does recoil on 7mm 08 compare to 270 or 243? i've considered a rem model 7 in 7mm08 or 308 as a gun for when my boys get a little older. i've never fired one though. would it make a good kids gun?

With standard loads a little less than 270 on recoil and little more than 243. If you need to tame recoil some for the youngsters use the manged recoil loads.

Absolutely my daughter loves hers. Remington 700 Bdl 7mm/08 in Alaskan Ti stock, they are an awesome rifle for kids.

I started shooting my 7mm-08 when I was 12 and I've shooting it for almost 10 years now. I never had a problem with the recoil and that was shooting a really lightweight Tikka T3 Lite. It makes a great kids gun and also a great anybody gun. 7mm-08 is a great caliber and now that it has become so popular the old issue of finding ammo isn't as big of deal now.

My wife, my daughter-in-law and my grandson all shoot a 7mm-08 and have killed many deer and hogs here in Texas. My wife has used her 7mm-08 to hunt antelope and mule deer in several Western states with great success. I personally shoot a Remington .260 and have used it all over the world. I shot a caribou at 428 yards with it and smoked him, dropped on the spot. I have killed many deer and lots of hogs with it. The .260 and 7mm-08 ballistics are very similar. The nice part is, almost no recoil with these calibers and good knock down power. I would highly recommend the 7mm-08 with a 140 grain Remington Accu-Tip
