Ok guys I need some figures and thoughts here. I am hopefully going to beable to allow me son to get his first buck this year 8 to 10 pionter. My question is "What type of mount would y'all suggest and what is the average cost for that type?". Also, if you know of any good but not ridiculously price Taxidermist in the Denton/DFW area please pass his info on. Please keep in mind that this is his first buck and I don't want a cheap fly by night guy doing it. I have heard of to many horror stories. Thanks, Mike
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Can't give you a recommendation for taxidermist in that area of Texas but I can tell you that in the San Angelo area our quality taxidermist offer a lifetime guaranteed mount for about $500. An important factor is whether the taxidermist has the hide tanned -tanning takes longer for the whole process to be completed but you certainly get what you pay for and that's usually a quality trophy mount. Happy hunting! Rocky Woodford Outfitting

Man I can't believe that with all the members we have on the THF only 1 person has posted any helpful info. Is he dead on or does no one else get taxidermist work done on deer.
If I'm not hunting something I must be dead.

Nothing compares to your first deer. Your son will remember it forever so you want a quality mount that will last a lifetime.
Go with a full shoulder mount. Choose a pose that will be versatile no matter where he hangs it - avoid a sneak pose or one with the neck turned too much.
I've always had my mounts done at Flagg but I haven't had a full shoulder mount done in 20 years so I can't comment on their current prices or quality.
I've got a friend who has had some nice mounts done on 3 170" trophies in the last couple of years. I'll get the name if his taxidermist and repost

I would go with a straight mount for a first mount it can go any where. As for prices its up to yoy how much you are willing to pay I charge 335.00 they can go up th 700.00 .I do 150 -200 animals a year by my self. Most Taxidermist these days have 3-4 guys putting them toghther and then the main man will set the eyes and so on.I get called a low baller by most Taxidermist but as a man with a family not all of us can afford to spend to much on a mount! Is up to you if you like the work and feel like thats what you are lookin for in a mount then I would use who ever that is .Look at the work and then choose because I have seen people pay 645.00 for a shoulder mount and not be happy at all and then put out more money to have me remount it so its not like the saying always ( you get what you pay for)!Goog luck ...

Try Rick's Outpost on 380 towards frisco. He did my bobcat and did a great job. Not sure on the price but he seems reasonable. His mounts in the shop look good.

Problem with alpine is you don't know who is doing the work? Three different guys do work for them at least, take it where you know who is doing the work!

Notamchance, I am a fresh taxidermist. I am learning as I go. I am trying to build my business and enjoy every bit of taxidermy. I am working on my family's animals I have in the freezer and I am proud of how they are turning out. I charge $400 for whitetail shoulder mount. I live close to the Greenville area. I am hoping this can be a full time job for me and would enjoy you giving me a chance. Good luck to you and your son on the upcoming deer season.

Like BMD says, "pictures worth a thousand words". I'm East Coast, going rate for shoulder mount is $475.00 - 525.00. You don't always get what you pay for, but you have to check the work out, and who will be doing it. Good luck to your son, wish him our best.

The taxi I use is in Kerrville, so a long way from where you are. But I would suggest you look at the pose I used for my buck. It is listed as My First Buck. I think I paid $595. Jake
