Just traded for a sweet Model 70 Featherweight in 257 Roberts.
What factory loads are you guys using for a .257 Roberts. It'll be for deer hunting.

I know they are really smooth to shoot, he has had a few and still has one I think. I prefer the 7/08 but the .257 is awesome little round too.

I've got an A-bolt in 7mm-08 that I got from Rickleytx. It's in a Boyd's laminate stock and the metal ( all of it ) has been duracoated. Can that stock be webbed like the others y'all have been doing? As far as the metal, I may have to have it stripped and dipped.

Congrats! The Bob is a sweet caliber.

Check out Hornady's Superperformance with the 117 gr SST. It's about as close you can get to hand load performance with factory loads.

I will have to check but think I have at least 2 boxes of the Light mag loads at the house and no longer have a 257Bob. Also have a set of Hornady dies if interested let me know. Hunting I used either the light Mags or a handload with 100gr partitions. Both worked very well

Hornady custom 117 gr +p BTSP is great in my ruger m77. Want to try Doubletaps 100 gr TTSX when midway gets them in stock. Also, Nosler loads a 110 gr Accubond that would be a great choice. You bought a great rifle for the roberts, should be very handy for TX deer.

I love the hornady 117 grain interlocks. i get them at bass pro for 27 a box. I shot 3 deer this year with it and not a single one took another step. I did find the bullet in the shoulder of a cull that i shot in the neck. traveled down its spine and stopped in the skin at the shoulder. the bullet retained most of its weight and mushroomed perfectly. I just hope it will be big enough to shoot the big bull elk in oregon..................

i would get something wiht a little more juice than a .257 roberts to shoot a bull elk

If I only had a 257 Roberts to hunt elk with, I would hunt while restricting myself to only broadside or slightly quartering away shots at less than 250 yards with premium bullets. I know one person who regularly hunts Colorado with his 257 and more trips than not he gets his elk, most of the time with one well placed shot. The limitations he uses are pretty much what I stated as mine.

yeah it definitely will take patience. i will more than likely get a 300 wm or a 300 wsm for elk. the only problem is that blacktail and elk seasons are at the same time and i plan on hunting both, but dont want to blow holes in a deer. i would probably take neck shots it i have to use it for elk. i have also talked to plenty of people that use the same round as i do and shoulder shoot elk and it doesnt even make it through the other side, but i would rather loose the 2-3 pounds of neck meat as compared to 10-15 pounds of hamburger from the shoulders

have you ever killed a deer before?

a .300 dosent "blow holes in deer", heck, with a barnes X bullet, entry and exit wounds are about the size of a sharpie marker.

in any case, you gear up for the largest animal you might encounter, not the smallest

yeah actually i have. lets see 5 a year for the last 29 years. you do the math. then try this on for size been working for a meat processing facility for the last 18 years. YES 300 do ruin meat.

God I love how morons on this forum know everything. the backside of a deer shot with a 300 is gone. trust me we do over 6000 deer a year.

Leave it to a city boy to say some [censored] like this. oh bigger is better.

"YES 300 do ruin meat."

Well, feel free to stick me in your moron category, because, it ain't what's on the cartridge headstamp that ruins meat. it's what kind of bullet you have in it, and where you hit the game.

The wrong bullet from a 243 can destroy more meat than the correct bullet from a 300 Mag.

well during season I see about 5 a week shot, majority of them shot with .300 wsm's shooting 150 grain bullets. lung shots no more meat damage than a smaller caliber. if your hunting for meat why shoot a deer in the shoulders? you work at a proccessing plant, this is day one stuff

I agree, and you get more meat from the neck then you do by boneing out the shoulder blades.

I also think that his choice of 300mag for elk and .257 for deer is as perfect as you can get. Given the right circumstances I would be ok using both cals for both game.

Im sorry for the name calling. It just aggrevates me to no end whenever i get told what damage a caliber does. blast a 300 through the shoulders you loose most of both shoulders. you lung shoot you tear nothing up. most people shoulder shoot not lung shoot.

to clarify i head shoot. does and bucks. i cant eat horns so they can get exploded. it has been since i was 22 years old that i have lung shot an animal and thats because i was in georgia shooting a monster 140lb doe with no headshot.

"blast a 300 through the shoulders you loose most of both shoulders"

again...it depends on what bullet you are using
