Hey guys I'm looking at this Remington.Seems like a good deal.
What my question is. What are your opinions on the 7MM Mag?
I know very little about this round. I thought I had my heart set on a 300 Win Mag.but this deal came along and I don't think I can let it pass by.
Thanks in advance.

I shoot a Weatherby Vanguard 7 mag and it has never let me down. never had a deer go more than 20 foot. every neck shot is DRT. very acurate! a very good round. IMO

Probably more rifle than you "need" for Texas hunting. But it will certainly do the job. Better suited, IMO, than the 300Mag.

What do you plan on using it for? Just Texas, or is elk hunting in your future?

I always used 66 gr of RL 22 and a 160 gr accubond. Worked from antelope to elk. Great all around cartridge here in Wyoming.

Not my favorite caliber, I always say if your gonna have a magnum you might as well get a .300mag

Having said that though the caliber is more than enough for anything up to elk and maybe even more.

If you have a good deal on one it will serve you well, What is the rifle your looking at and how much is it>?

Excellent round. It's pretty stout but if you have a heavy gun the recoil isn't too bad.

Solid round, but make sure the rifle you're getting isn't to light for that round.

I had a Savage model 110 and kicked like a mule. Shot my cousin's Browning A bolt stalker and didn't even notice it. Was like night and day.

It's a Remington 700 with a nice 6.5-20 ao scope on it.
The guy wants $450 for it.Says it has had less than a box of shells thru it.Looks like new.

What type of scope? That may be a little high if the scope isnt quality.

But 7mm Mag is not too much gun for Texas deer. I shoot 140g Hornady SP's out of mine and they klobber deer with minimal meat damage. actually the load i use in mine are just a bit more potent than a 7mm08. You cant go wrong with a 7mag. You will have much more meat damage with a 300.

If it turns your crank, then get it, there are no flies on the 7mm Rem Mag.

Some good handloads, and it will really sing!

Don't shoot them in the meat!

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Factory 7-mag is good round, a handloaded 7-mag is even better.

Thats a preaty solid looking rifle for $400!!! figure another $50 for the shipping and transfer, and Redfield is a good scope.

beware about the gun your buying if its an NCstar or other cheap scope it may fail with the recoil of a 7mag

I love my 7MM Rem Mag. High Shoulder Shot and they are DRT! It is my go to gun only gets shot about 5 times a year but when the trigger is pulled you better believe that something is going in the freezer! Either 100 yard shots or out to 500 its accurate and the recoil in my opinion is less than the 300 but make sure you get a scope on there that handles the recoil.

I am a PH in RSA and the US. For 25 years I used one rifle in 7mm Rem Mag for everything I shot. The only time I carried another centerfire rifle was my doublegun when taking clients on dangerous game. I personally shot 411 big game animals before I ever used another centerfire caliber. Since then I have shot a few more with that rifle. I have used a whole slew of different calibers now that I am on pro staffs for ammo manufacturers and have other sponsors. I've had good luck with other calibers that seem just as effective, but I don't have nearly the number of experiences to compare to the 7mm Rem Mag. Last year I drew and elk tag in CO and I fretted about what rifle to take. At the last minute I took my trusty old 7mm Rem Mag. When the elk showed, he dropped with one shot. My load was always a 160 grain Nosler Partition at 2950 fps (nothing spectacular in this caliber). For some reason my rifle began to open up the usual minute of angle groups about 3 years ago. After some experimentation I was able to get it back to minute of angle with the 160 gr Accubond with different load components. I think the old Douglas barrel is worn out after over 2000 rounds fired. I've lost one animal that I shot with this caliber and I've needed a second shot on 14 animals (out of over 400). My advice is to get the best optics you can afford, learn the trajectory of your rifle to memory and take careful shots. If you can get the bullet in the right spot you will take home your game. From bushbuck to bison and baboon to buffalo, muntjac to mountain goat and everything from a 25 pound dik-dik to 2000 pounds of Eland, the 7mm Rem Mag with 160 gr bullets has got it done. What may come as a surprise is that I won't tell you it is the best nor will I knock a different cartridge. What I can tell you is that is has worked for me throughout the world and it is capable if you do your job. At the moment I am hunting with different cartridges and learning the capabilities of them. Enjoy!

You can't go wrong with a 7mag; it is pretty much a do anything caliber. (unless your a pelt collector..)
