I'd try to find a Remington 788 in it. They are great shooters for the money. Probably a few floating around on gunbroker.

The 788s are some pretty decent shooting rifles. I have a Mod. 70 that shoots pretty well too. I bought it used for 400.

I'd say your best odds of buying a good shooter for that price would be a Savage.

Take your pick. I am a Remington fan, but my Vanguard 22-250 bbl is a very fine shooter.

Can you really get one for under $500? If so I'd change my recommendation to that in a heartbeat.

Rusty, the vanguard has a 1:12 or 1:14 twist can't remember, won't hoot anything over 55gr worth a poop

Check out Dick's sporting goods. I got a Remington 700 ADL Varmint 22-250 last year for $425 with scope. They run sales from time to time for about the same price. It's been a good gun.

My Savage .22-250 is a 1:14" and 55 grainers is as heavy as it's loaded for. In about 4 or 5 years I'll have the barrel shot out then it's going to get a 1:7" or 1:8" twist and I'm gonna run 70 grain bullets.

Right now my 55 grain bullets go sub sonic at 675 yds @ 500' elevation (Collin County). I bet I can get much farther with a 70 gr. plus out of the harder twist barrel.

I had a remington 788 and it was the best shooting rifle that I have ever owned. That being said I'm on my third 22-250 and they all have shot well. Currently own a Ruger and I like it. Just not as much as the 788. Only downside of the 788 is that they were a lower end rifle and don't look as good. But they make up for it with the way they shoot.

+1 for Savage. 1:12 twist, sub-moa out of the box, accu-trigger, no tweeking needed. Don't get one of the "package" guns with the cheap glass.

Good Hunting!

FYI-You can get a Model 11G for $398 shipped from Bud's right now: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/78471

Stevens 200, a tad over $300 or so, package deals with junk scopes too. the 200s are tack drivers, ugly but real shooters.

I miswrote. It is a model 12 FLV and it is a 1:12" twist.
