I have a Winchester model 70 mountain rifle in '06 and it kicks like a dang mule. Never feel it when shooting an elk though.

What is your price?

For a production rifle I would recommend a Sako or Tikka rifle. Please dont go and destroy the rifles proportions and balance by putting a huge objective scope on it; resulting in a rifle with club like handling tendancies. Most poeple wouldnt know a lively, well proportioned rifle if it was right in front of them. 40mm is plenty, I prefer 20mm-32mm. Quality glass is paramount with smaller objectives...

For a custom build I like Mauser actions, well-proportioned english stalking style stock, light contour barrel, back-up iron sights with a small objective scope.

Price is not as important as quality an comfort. Who custom builds a good light weight gun?

Don't need no custom. A Tikka T3 Lite will get the job done and you won't feel bad about beating it up.

Seriously, they shoot incredibly well out of the box. I was at the range and my Tikka was shooting groups just as good as my friend's custom from Hill Country Rifles.

280 or a 300.... Start with a 700 action and go from there. If $ isn't an issue, go 30378 and brake it. Our Mnt rifles are remmy AWRs

I once had the DISpleasure of sighting in my boss's Weatherby ultralight in 300 Wby Mag. It was a NICE rifle, light as a feather, but one yank of the bang switch let me know why he was paying me to sight it in...

It's just one shot... Use the brake on the bench and cap it in the field, but make sure it's still holding zero.

I really like the versatility of the 7mm Mag.

Spears are light and versitle, plus they don't recoil. Just Saying.

Look at the Remington Alaskan TI My boss has 2 and there both super light and accurate.

I shot 2 of my 5 sheep with the New Ultra Lite Arms Model 20 in .284 Win. With a Leupold 2.5x8 scope and a magazine full of ammo, it weighs right at 6 lbs. Now that I'm on the wrong side of fifty, I appreciate light weight when it comes to climbing mountains.

Melvin Forbes has been making these rifles for several decades now. They are <1 MOA guns, and my favorite load shoots a 140 gr bullet at over 3000 fps.

For a dedicated mountain rifle, it's hard to beat a NULA. And, like a prvious poster opined, DON'T you dare hang a big, bulky scope on a trim rifle!

My vote is for the TC (im partial, love mine). Its not the lightest rifle made but its far from heavy and the breakover action reduces teh overall lenght significantly. Also, you can get what ever caliber you want by simply swapping out the barrel and recoil is greatly reduced with the flextech stock.

Cant go wrong with a light kampfeld custom in 300wsm. Also looks good with 2.5x10 scope on it.

What are some options to take the recoil out or minimize it to some extent, or is that just pay peter to save paul thing? What is the best all around caliber for shooting these distances in a compact gun like a mountain rifle?
