Depends on what you are hunting. Deer - OK, Dove - nope (can't even sit on tailgate and shoot), Hogs - OK.

Couldn't find it on the site either but know that they have that info in the book they publish each year. What are you wanting to hunt from a vehicle? The situations are almost endless.

your friend is wrong... it's perfectly legal to shoot deer, hogs, exotics, rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, and other 4 legged animals.

not sure about quail...but I think they are legal to shoot from a vehicle too.

dove aren't though for certain.

It's legal on private land (where you have permission to hunt)
EXCEPT for ANY migratory game birds.

I've been doing it about 40 years now and have talked to numerous GWs, while hunting from the truck, and NEVER had a problem.

But I do know that even sitting on the tailgate or even leaning up against the truck, while dove hunting CAN get you a ticket.

Quail are cool from a vehicle, we have racks on the front of all the jeeps with two swivel chairs for quail hunting. Like above posts said, not cool with migratory birds though.

As long as vehicle is on private land and it isn't migratory.

The deal about dove hunting is fine except the sitting on tail gate part! That blows, park under tree and sitting drinking a cold one(cola) and I don't see where they figure that could be wrong! Now driving along shooting them out of the trees or hiline would be different! Whats the difference in tail gate or chair..the chair can be 6 foot away from truck and all is cool?

It's the law, and it's plain and simple to follow.

My favorite example was a client that got a ticket from the tailgate......................

Not once... but two consecutive weekends from the same warden.......

"It is LEGAL to shoot feral hogs and white-tailed deer from a vehicle if:

You are on private property;
You have landowner’s permission to be hunting on that property; and
You are obeying all other laws applicable to hunting.

that tailgate deal is ridiculous.... no wonder people get twisted off with game wardens... you can't convince me that the INTENT of the law was to ticket people sitting on a stationary vehicle that is not in operation.

"yeah, it's hard for us to catch actual poachers, so we're going to manipulate the actual meaning of the law so we can generate revenue and make it look like actual work"

So is it illegal to shoot migratory gamebirds from a parked stationary boat?

Didn't think so. So why is it illegal to shoot doves from a parked stationary truck? What's the difference?

However, according to the laws, it says you may hunt from a "floating device OR a boat". It does not say the boat has to be floating. So everyone just trailer your boat to the dove field next year and hunt from your boat.

I bet you would bitch the loudest if you found a trespasser poaching your lease too.

The intent is "Game Violations" are the hardest crimes to enforce, as you would have people driving around in trucks slaughtering birds then would turn the truck off and claim it was stationary when the GW popped up. Go ride along with one and see how hard there job is before you bitch and wine about it.

pretty tough to write those tickets to someone shooting doves off a tailgate....

maybe poachers who shoot deer at night just claim the deer was already dead and they just found it when the game warden pops up? that must make it tough to prove...

I think it's obvious who is driving around in a truck shooting birds, and who is using it as a device to plant their [censored] on.

maybe they need to assume anyone that is close to a truck could have been driving it. Maybe there should be a radial distance to stay away from motorized vehicles?

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't a warden have to actually bear witness to someone shooting doves while sitting on the tailgate to start with?

I was just going to say something about this...

what if someone was sitting on the tailgate, but stands up to shoot the birds? you're not "hunting" on a motorized vehicle...

what would be the difference in that, and getting in the truck, 4 wheeler, or other to move to another spot, and then get out and start shooting birds again?

I belive people have forgotten to mention one important thing about huntin from a vehicle. For game animals, all added propolsion must be stopped. No driving, sailing, rowing ect. You cannot chase a game animal with a truck or boat. No harrassment of wildlife.
