So I got my Viper in today. And I took the Whitetail Classic off the A-Bolt. And I took them outside, side by side. I'm not going to say I couldn't tell a difference, but I will say it wasn't an angels singing hallelujah difference. The image is a little clearer. Past that, I don't know that I'm 500% happier with the Viper than I am with the Whitetail Classic. I tried them in broad daylight, sunset, dusk, and about 5 minutes ago. I could see a little better with the Viper, but not life alteringly so...

I dunno, I just expected to really be impressed by the difference. I wasn't...

There's a good chance it's going to find its way back to New York or on to Ebay...

I guess so- I've shot some nice groups and killed a whole bunch of pigs, deer, and yotes with that ole cheapo scope.

Sounds like you have some nice history filled with good times with your WT classic. Is the Viper your first experience with higher end larger scopes? Have you ever tried a friends or do you own another big expensive scope? If you have, how does the Viper compare with those?

It's my first higher end scope. I have an older VXI and I would say it's comparable.

when you buy a $50 scope and a $200 scope, you will see a big improvement... it'll be about 50% better.... not twice as good, but a LOT better

when you compare the $200 scope to a $400 scope, you'll see about 10% better clarity....

400 to 800 is a tiny improvement, and i can't tell the difference after that

your real cost in HIGH end scopes comes from features like Click adjustments, ultralight design, high durability and better field of view...

your view might not change much but the things you can DO with that view WILL

I currently have a Zeiss 3.5-10 on my Browning and a leupold vx1 3-9x50 on a savage i rarely use...

in low light and less than optimal seeing conditions, the zeiss is noticably better. In broad daylight with a clear line of sight, the difference is almost nil.... just a little more clarity at the edges and a wider field of view.

That's a price difference of 200% for almost no gain under most circumstances.

If you're happy with your cheaper scope and it does the job, you might have wasted the money on the Viper... of course, i wouldn't sell my zeiss... it's a better scope than my loopy.. wink

Those Whitetail Classics are the best scopes I've seen Simmons come out with. My buddy has one on his custom mauser .25-06 (it came on it). He can afford any glass he wants, but has never seen a reason to replace that ol Simmons (although it looks like the odd-duck in the gun room next to all the Swaros, Z's, and Leupys).

A viper is not a higher end scope to begin with it is on the minimum acceptable end, definitely not high end confused2

When you move to a better scope the difference isn't going to be like fireworks going off or a band stiking up with horns and drums, but it is a lot more suttle and noticable mainly under field conditions, where the light bulb goes off and you'll say.....Ahhhhhh!...Now this is a scope!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

You're not alone with your vortex viper experience.

IMO, disappointing scope at best.

Don't you have an Affliction shirt to model?

I dunno, after listening to all the chest pounding and bsing about optics I was expecting to really notice a difference- I didn't. That money can be better spent elsewhere, the Whitetail Classic goes back on the Browning and the Viper goes back to NY unless somebody in the metromess wants one and doesn't want to wait for it to get here.

Good to hear honest feedback on it (good or bad). Alot of people here recommend them just because they have them...... and just because they have them they think they are good.

I have looked through them and didnt see what all the fuss was about. They are a good scope but not as good as all the hype you hear about them.
