Did anyone hunt there opening weekend? I hunted Lipan opening weekend and took one nice bird, 21 pounds over 1 inch spurs. I did scout LBJ on Thurs. and Fri. before driving to Lipan. I saw several longbeards strutting with hens on adjacent private property. The birds were gobbling good early. I did see one longbeard on the government land Thur. afternoon. I also saw good sign in another area in LBJ. Saw good sign in an area where I killed a gobbler last year, but I also saw several different boot tracks. I'm probably going to head that way closer to the end of the month. Anybody have any reports about LBJ?

No I don't lease. I was hunting some private land. Only saw and heard two longbeards the whole weekend. At least I got one of them though. The jakes were gobbling their heads off. Looks like some good future turkey hunting in Texas. Nobody has hunted LBJ yet? I'm sure some of you have.

All I know is alot folks were on LBJ but no one I talked to had killed anything but we were getting some response to our calls. We just get busted by some trail riders. I personally think they should close all the trails during opening weekend at least, instead of just closing the orange trail.

Ed, do they allow trail riding in all of the areas of the Grasslands, or are there designated areas? The areas I hunt I have never seen sign of horses being there.

The majority of the trails are in the areas around Black Creek Lake and Cottonwood lake but the Orange and Red trails go up into area 14,15 and 76. It is best to avoid the trail areas, they have the highest hunter concentration also.

I put together my own detailed map from the internet. It's a must if you know nothing about LBJ.

I agree sometime my son and I will use Google earth on his Iphone when we are on the ground. I bet my Dad up in heaven thinks, "Boy put that away and just hunt" LOL

Ed, I'm coming over to LBJ the end of next week to do a little hunting. I'll probably hunt Thur-Sat. My LA. season ends this weekend. Have you heard of anyone having any luck? Are you still hearing some birds? I saw some good sign a couple weeks ago, but I'm sure hunters have already put a lot of pressure on them.

We were out this past weekend and we heard or saw nothing. Not even any other hunters. My experience out there is the Pressure is very heavy the first two weekends. I really need to scout some of the outlying areas like up around 8 and 9 or 59 and 60. Just too many folks even on light days in the areas around FS904 where we ususally hunt.
Got any tips on areas?

I've got some tips, but I don't want to make them public. I'll PM you later.

Ed, LBJ has been pretty quiet. I saw four jakes in area 71. I saw longbeards in areas 50 and 66 before season opened, but no sign of them last week. The only longbeard I saw last week was driving around close to area 48. There is a big group of jakes on private land close to area 70. Don't know if they would be close enough to call in. I saw two different trucks there last week. I have killed 3 Toms in Texas this season, but none in the Grasslands. Good luck next week.
