I know 3 photographers that will only use Nikon. But to be honest, they are both good cameras.

Yep. I know quite a few "pro" photographers. ALL of them shoot Nikon. One of them sells cameras for a living. His advice was if you have the extra money to spend on a nicer body go Nikon, but for the average shooter you get more options on cheaper bodies in Canon.

I am a big fan of Canon for my low light sports shots. If you want to shoot sports or outdoors most are Canons. If you see a large white lens on tv or major sporting events they are Canons. If you want to shoot low light at dusk get ready to spend big dollars. I was a huge Nikon film camera guy. Then I purchased a Nikon point and shoot for fun and was really disgusted with it. I picked my wife up a Canon 50D with 20-70 and 70-200 F2.8 and fell in love with Canon. The 50d is smoking fast. Good luck with your choice they both make great cameras. My comparison is Mercedes/BMW. LOL!

All 3 of my Canons in 20D,50D, and 7D have the magnesium body. What is the Nikon body made of that makes it so special? I know several professional photographers that shoot nothing but Canon. They don't sell them either, but make their living with them.

Get the adaptor and use your spotting scope as your long range lense

This works well if you get the adapter. Give it a try by holding the cam up to the eyepiece. not ideal but you will get the idea of how well it can work. up

If you already have a spotting scope with good optics, it is a good alternatice and a whole lot cheaper than buying a camera lense.
