Hood and Erath Co

Opening day, bird at 8 yards, my buddy arrows him. Then they shut down, wont gobble, high winds and we go all day.
Second day, gobbles early, high winds and see hens everywhere looking like they are on nests. One bird.

Last weekend, high winds, see some spot and stalk to within 60 yards, get one to turn and come in about 30 yards and got him.

Still it is tougher then usual. What do you do when they won't talk, won't respond or they are henned up? Next, if they are done breeding, how do you get one to work?

I have two more hunts to do for others and start working on birds for me.

Stick with it. I had toms all around me on Tuesday morning and none of them seemed to be responding well at all. But then around 9:30am 2 of them joined up and came in fast but did not get within shotgun range.

Went back to the truck around 11:15 am and had one to gobble about 300 yards from it so I headed after him, he wasen't responding at all but gobbling every 2 minutes on his own so I slipped to within 15yards of him and got busted. This Tom was in his favorite strut zone I slipped in on him 3 days before that in the same spot but never got a chance to see him nor did he get a chance to see me.

Best bet is to find the Toms strut Zones ( where they like to Strut and where you have seen them a lot strutting) during the mid to late morning times. sit and wait on them if they arent responding to calls.

I hunted the first week of May for a lot of years in central Texas and experienced some of the best turkey hunting that I have ever seen.

I think it changes from year to year but we had gobblers running all over us for about a 10 year span while hunting in May.

It is hot though.

This river don't go to Aintry.

May can often be the easiest time of the year to call in some gobblers. The older toms know it is about over and are looking for those last few hens that have not breed or are starting over from a nest being destroyed. Feeder hunting is not bad since the toms are also beginning to think about food again

Good advice, I have three feeders still going, sadly the roost is right between then and I took down my game cams.

Looking forward to giving it a shot. I will go again this week during the week. I am out of birds in the freezer, time to put 8 breasts in it

Welcome to Turkey hunting. That is just the way it goes somethimes. Also be sure that the reason he is not coming in is you.. They have very keen eyesight and some hunters will say a close in bird is "hen'd up" when he is actually spotting them or does not feel right about their setup. Full camo and no movement is key when they start getting close.

Funny thing about getting older:
Your eyesight starts getting weaker but your ability to
see through people's BS gets much better.
