I've got a new bow on the way that will be used exclusively for hunting, and was wondering just how critical a stabilizer is. I mean, does it really make that much difference? And if so, which one? There's literally hundreds to choose from. What length/weight? Is there really that much difference in a $70 one and a $30 one, and why?

In case it helps, I shoot 29"/70#/386 gr. arrow. The new bow is a 2011 Martin Firecat 400 in black.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

J.R.

Really depends on your shooting setup. I'd think a 7" or so would be the longest you'd want to use in most hunting situations the 4" or so are probably the most popular. The heavier you go the more stability. Also depending on your bow will decide how much forward weight or stabilizer you need.

The axioms are popular, the octanes are nice and look cool. Doinkers have a funny name and the limb savers are very cheap.

Like anything else it depends on what works for you. I got hooked on the stab I am shooting years ago and have stuck with it. Ive got a couple extra ones if you wanna try them to see if they will work for you

Bowtechs are so smooth they don't need stabilizers grin

Have the sims modular(4 modules) on mine but I reeeaaaly don't think it's necessary for hunting. Many times I will take off two or three of the modules when hunting and it hasn't hurt my shooting yet...

Sad thing is this is pretty true. When I was testing them out I was shooting the Destoryer and Monster I had the heaviest stabilizer they had in the shop on the omen and it was very comparable to the destoryer without.

The omen is pretty dead in hand but it likes to rock back just slightly. I have a pretty heafty one on to try and get the bow to fall foward and still need more weight.

Congrats on the new bow. You said it wouldn't be long.

I'd say "critical" depends on the shooter and bow.

Shoot your bow with one and without one and decide for yourself. I thought my bow felt more balanced with the stabilizer, but I could probably shoot without it just fine.

Thanks! I'm sure looking forward to it. Waiting 3-4 weeks for it to arrive is killing me. Without my bow to priactice with, my wife noticed I now have time to mow, take out the trash, trim the hedges, feed the dogs and stuff like that hammer

It will depend on the bow and the shooter. If you are looking for a stabilizer that stabilizes the bow, BStinger is about as good as it gets. 8" with a 12 ounce weight is a good size for hunting. If you want one that helps kill vibrations, Limbsavers SCoils are hard to beat. Try several out and decide what feels the best to you.

We build a stabilizer called the Woody that works great. If you're a hunter and do not target shoot I would suggest one that contains more rubber as you really only need it for vibration.
